What is a technologist?

A medical technologist is a highly trained health care professional who performs various tests and analyzes blood, urine, and spinal fluids in a hospital or laboratory to diagnose diseases. As a medical technologist, you also prepare blood and plasma for transfusions. Other duties include ensuring all lab equipment, such as spectrophotometers and colorimeters, function properly by completing routine maintenance and calibration. You collaborate with doctors and lab directors and maintain a clean work environment by following all regulations and lab procedures. Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in medical technology or a related field to acquire an entry-level position, but many employers prefer a master’s degree as well as strong communication skills to effectively speak with patients. Earning your state MT certification through the American Medical Technologists is preferred.
