Job Title: Lab Technician
Job Description
As a Lab Technician, you will perform essential quality tasks including laboratory testing and plant/facility quality monitoring. This involves conducting microbiological, shelf-life, fat, and solids testing, as well as allergen testing where appropriate. You will ensure proper documentation and record-keeping consistent with the SQF system's documentation control procedure.
Responsibilities
- Conduct routine component testing of incoming materials.
- Perform microbiological testing on raw materials, work in process, and finished products using SPC, coliform, and yeast/mold 3M Petrifilm and PDA media plating.
- Evaluate the sensory quality of products during and at the end of their shelf-life.
- Inspect equipment pre-operation, including visual inspection and ATP swabbing.
- Monitor air quality using RCS Air Sampler and PDA pour plates.
- Test water quality for coliform and TPC within the facility.
- Perform environmental pathogen swabbing within the facility.
- Conduct allergen testing on equipment and products where appropriate.
- Maintain a proper inventory of all laboratory supplies.
- Keep accurate documentation and records associated with responsibilities.
- Coordinate with third-party laboratories for necessary sampling and testing.
- Assist the Quality Systems Supervisor and Manager with other duties as needed.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor of Science in Food Science, Microbiology, Chemistry, or a related field.
- Ability to work weekends as needed.
- Familiarity with laboratory testing procedures and quality monitoring.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in microbiological testing and quality control.
- Ability to work in cold temperatures briefly due to working with fridges/freezers.
- Comfortable working with dairy products for sensory testing.
Work Environment
The Lab Technician will work in a fast-paced, small lab environment within a dairy manufacturing plant. While the lab is not a clean-room environment and is somewhat outdated, it maintains a collaborative team atmosphere. The position requires occasional walking on the production floor to ensure compliance with GMPs and to test samples. The regular schedule is Monday through Friday from 2 pm to 10:30 pm, with openness to work one weekend day. The dress code includes PPE provided by the company, closed-toe shoes, and no jewelry. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $23.00/hr.
