GDS A Mechanic

Southern Cross is actively seeking experienced and motivated GDS A Mechanics to support ongoing Gas Distribution Services operations for Con Edison throughout New York City and surrounding operating areas.

Position Overview

As a GDS A Mechanic, you will perform skilled gas distribution work supporting public safety, gas system integrity, and customer service operations.

Responsibilities include:

  • Responding to inside and outside gas leak investigations

  • Performing gas repairs on jurisdictional piping

  • Integrity testing and gas relights

  • Service line inspections

  • Natural gas detector installation support

  • Compliance inspections and follow-up work

  • Identification and communication of corrosion and safety concerns

  • Coordination with Con Edison operational leadership

  • Supporting field operations, emergency response, and restoration activities

This is a field-based role requiring professionalism, urgency, strong safety awareness, and the ability to work independently in active utility environments.

Required Qualifications

  • Con Edison Operator Qualifications (Transcript Required)

  • Northeast Gas Association (NGA) Qualifications (Transcript Required)

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Valid Driver's License with a clean driving record

  • Strong communication and customer service skills

  • Ability to work independently and make sound field decisions

  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions

  • Basic computer proficiency (Outlook, Teams, Excel, Adobe, etc.)

Preferred Experience

We highly encourage applicants with experience in:

  • Con Edison gas operations

  • Gas leak investigations

  • Gas distribution field work

  • Utility contracting

  • Mechanical field services

  • Emergency response operations

Compensation & Schedule

  • Starting at $38/hour for candidates with 5+ years of experience

  • Compensation for candidates with less experience is negotiable based on qualifications

  • Company vehicle provided

  • Monday-Friday schedule with rotating shifts and occasional weekends
