By ZipRecruiter Marketplace Research Team

What Is a Visual Manager?

A visual manager creates the aesthetic look of retail, grocery, and home improvement stores by developing the merchandise floor plan of the whole store or showroom, or multiple stores in an area. Your responsibilities include updating the setup, fixtures, and layout of each display based on sales data and seasonal changes to maximize profitability. Other duties include monitoring competitors, altering floor plans based on what is and is not selling, and developing signage. You also oversee employees and create and direct training programs to ensure workers maintain visual standards.

How Do You Become a Visual Manager?

The qualifications required for a career as a visual manager do not include education beyond a high school diploma, but many employers prefer you have an associate degree in business administration, fine arts, or visual merchandising. Presenting a relevant portfolio of past work is required for most employers. Visual managers work nights and weekends, and those who work in corporate office settings still often visit their stores in the morning and on weekdays, so having a flexible schedule is necessary. Some employers require five years of experience in visual-related positions in addition to a two or four-year degree. You should also be able to lift 25 pounds, climb ladders, and operate equipment for large displays.

What Skills Do Successful Visual Managers Have?

Successful visual managers are creative and able to work with a design team to develop marketing materials to influence customers toward a purchase. You are knowledgeable about the store’s products, including profit margins, size, and sales success while developing strategies. You should be adept at conducting competitive analysis and staying updated on emerging design strategies. Other desired skills include a sharp eye for detail, a talent for strategy, strong spatial awareness, and an innovative design sense when creating signage and other marketing materials. Time management, self-motivation, and a healthy respect for deadlines are all required for this position.
