What Is a Remote Data Abstractor and How to Become One

As a remote data abstractor, you work from home to review and assess clinical data in medical records to verify compliance with health care standards and company regulations. Your duties and responsibilities include abstracting key information from charts, performing clinical auditing, and entering data into a database. You are also responsible for ensuring that electronic records are complete and accurate, and for identifying opportunities for improvement in the data collection and auditing workflow. Patient safety initiatives and quality of care are at the top of your priorities, so you must be meticulously analytical, with strong strategic-thinking skills.

To become a data abstractor, you need expertise in abstracting data related to cardiovascular conditions, trauma, cancer diagnoses, and the like. Advanced qualifications such as an RN or LPN license are often needed to achieve the required familiarity with medical terminology and the health care system. You also need strong project management skills and the ability to pay close attention to detail. Further, as a remote employee, you must have good computer skills, a reliable, high-speed internet connection, and the ability to work independently and meet productivity goals with little direct oversight. Previous experience in a remote role is also an asset.
