What Is a Project Controls Scheduler and How to Become One

As a project controls scheduler, your responsibilities include schedule planning and creation, execution, maintenance, and management of a portfolio of projects. When a project is approved, your job is to develop schedules with your manager for each phase, review change orders, and determine inventory and cost impacts. You are using a variety of software programs such as project management tools, Microsoft office, and Primavera P6 to effectively plan, schedule, and track project and materials delivery. Other duties include updating project schedules as needed, maintaining correct activity codes, reviewing project statuses, and preparing detailed schedule and cost reports as needed including actual plans, milestones, and “what if” scenarios.

Qualifications to become a project controls specialist include a bachelor’s degree in engineering or the sciences, though employers often prefer that you have a master’s in business administration and experience in production control planning. Many positions require you to have experience with using Primavera P6, CPM Scheduling, Microsoft software, automated accounting, and cost management systems. You also need specialized knowledge related to the industry you work in, such as construction or engineering, as well as knowledge of project controls terminology, cost engineering scheduling, and estimating. It is essential to have strong communication and interpersonal skills and be comfortable giving presentations for a project, client, and management review. You must fully understand all compliance laws and company policies, and ensure all details are in line with each contract.
