As a medical coding instructor, you teach students on the proper application of coding and billing medical records within healthcare industry standards. Your duties are to prepare curricula, plan assignments, grade tests, evaluate student progress, provide course materials, and answer questions. Within your classes, you explain coding procedures, detail the billing process, review time requirements, demonstrate how to analyze records for accuracy and completeness, how to perform coding activities, and how to address common errors and issues. You may teach classes in person or online and your students may include physicians, technicians, and other healthcare staff.

To become a medical coding instructor, you need an associate degree in medical billing and coding as well as certification, including passing the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) Certification Exam. Certification should be specific to medical coding and medical billing. Experience in the medical field is essential, particularly in positions with responsibilities related to billing. Further qualifications include knowledge of medical records management, medical terminology, administrative duties, skills for electronic medical record software programs, and healthcare theory and reasoning. You must attend conferences to stay up to date on current regulations and new developments within the billing and medical coding field.
