A lead developer has the same responsibilities as a developer, but must also direct others and ensure they adhere to determined software quality standards. You work with business analysts to produce relevant software products and participate in design decisions, tool selection, and improvements to the overall development process. You mentor your team, provide them with better strategies to build computer programs and advise them on emerging techniques and processes.

Qualifications needed to become a lead developer include at least eight years of experience in areas using Microsoft technologies or Java, experience designing databases, using service-oriented architectures, developing external facing websites, and using developer applications such as JavaScript, JSON, and XML. Many employers prefer candidates with a working knowledge of Scrum and Agile methodology. You must understand and be able to effectively communicate the principles of good software development and design, as well as the practices being used in the coding process and their benefits. It is essential that you are able to work well on a team and are comfortable mentoring and providing guidance to junior developers.

The positions of lead developer and senior developer have similar technical abilities. They should both have mastered many technologies and development tools and be able to adapt to project modifications. However, for companies that have both positions, the lead developer is in charge of the development team which includes senior developers. As the lead, you handle some client interaction and work closely with and manage junior team members to mentor them and help them improve their skills. A senior developer does not work directly with the client, does not spend significant time mentoring, and focuses mainly on their part of projects, which is often a substantial piece.

Requirements and Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in software development and project management
• Experience leading a development team
• Working knowledge of software development processes and methodologies
• Proficiency in web development technologies, such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
• Familiarity with database design and development
• Experience with source control systems and version control
• Excellent problem-solving and communication skills
