Counterintelligence Jobs - What Are They and How to Get One

The primary qualifications for a counterintelligence job are a bachelor's degree and several years of experience. Some employers accept additional education in place of work experience, with a master's or doctorate in a relevant field being preferable. Also, most counterintelligence jobs require a top secret/sensitive compartmentalized information (TS/SCI) security clearance. Getting this security clearance requires employer sponsorship, an exhaustive background investigation, and several interviews. It can take more than a year to get this clearance, so some employers ask you to do other work while you wait. Fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of a counterintelligence job requires experience processing large amounts of data, attention to detail, and excellent analytical skills.

Counterintelligence careers focus on preventing or thwarting operations to obtain information or sabotage programs or facilities. In this role, you may act as a special agent to investigate a potential threat, support security around special events, gather the intelligence needed to protect your target, and help with the detection of irregularities in information. Many counterintelligence officers conduct vulnerability surveys, keep up-to-date with information about potential adversaries, monitor potential insider threats, and coordinate with others as needed. Counterintelligence careers are especially common in the military and with government contractors, but civilian roles that focus on protecting businesses from spies and saboteurs exist as well.
