What Is a Computer Trainer and How to Become One

A computer trainer is responsible for teaching students and employees about technical topics such as computer systems, servers, network hardware, and workstations. In this role, you develop the curriculums used to instruct employees. You typically work in the IT departments of an organization or as part of a corporate training department. You can specialize in certain types of hardware and software such as Microsoft or IBM. Your job duties as a computer trainer include teaching classes of employees or other students, leading discussions on technical support issues, and assisting students that are seeking technical certifications.

The qualifications needed for a career as a computer trainer begin with a bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, networking, or a related field. Some employers may hire individuals with associate’s degrees, but you should obtain a certification to make-up for your lower degree. There are many certifications available, including the Microsoft Certified Engineer designation or one more focused on instruction. To be a good computer trainer, you need strong teaching skills and a wealth of technical knowledge. You must also be comfortable working with a classroom full of students.
