A components engineer oversees the proper selection of components for an electrical or mechanical assembly, or in the design of a new piece of machinery. As a components engineer, your responsibilities include testing and installing these components to ensure they are of the highest quality before utilizing them in a project. Other duties include identifying the best suppliers for each component and maintaining a library of parts for each project or equipment. A components engineer can work in a variety of industries.

To become a components engineer, you typically need at least a bachelor's degree in engineering and relevant experience. Employers may require you to have specialization in their industry or field of engineering. For instance, to work for a company that specializes in electrical projects, you may need an electrical engineering degree, whereas you may need a mechanical engineering degree to work for an automotive or manufacturing business. Some companies may also prefer applicants with additional educational qualifications or specific skills, such as understanding quality systems or computers.
