The primary qualifications for a job in captioning are a high school diploma or GED certificate and excellent communication skills. Employers prefer applicants who have call center experience, but this is not necessary for most roles. Performing the duties of a captioning job requires excellent short-term memory, fast and accurate typing skills, and the ability to communicate effectively through speech and text. Most captioning jobs are largely independent, so the ability to work well with minimal supervision is essential to success.

Captioning jobs include a variety of positions that involve turning speech into text. In this type of role, you may provide on-demand transcription for phone calls or television programs, correct the work of another typist, or help a company subtitle existing content. Captioning jobs often include closed captioning (CC) projects, but there are also many captioning opportunities that work directly with the deaf or hard-of-hearing. In this position, you may repeat language verbally to help provide accurate captions, interpret a variety of accents and regional dialects, and type while listening. Captioning jobs frequently involve signing confidentiality agreements to protect the privacy of the content or people involved.
