What Is a Backroom Associate?

A backroom associate organizes the stock room of a retail store and makes sure merchandise makes it to the sales floor. Job duties include receiving deliveries, unpacking and inspecting merchandise, tagging items for inventory control purposes, and organizing items for quick retrieval. They mainly work in the stock room, and customer interaction is limited. The qualifications for a career as a backroom associate are a high school diploma or GED certificate, on-the-job training, organizational skills, and experience with data entry and computer systems.

How to Become a Backroom Associate

There are no formal education requirements to become a backroom associate, but most have at least a high school diploma or GED certificate. Employers often consider this an entry-level position and provide on-the-job training for new staff, but many companies prefer candidates who have at least a year of retail or warehouse experience. You must be proficient with basic computer programs, such as Microsoft Word and Excel, and have experience with inventory systems and data entry. Having prior roles in customer service is also a plus. Additional qualifications include the ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 pounds, excellent communication and organizational skills, and attention to detail.
