What Is an Associate Manager?

An associate manager oversees employees at a company or organization to help improve productivity and performance. These management professionals may work in a variety of departments, such as quality assurance or marketing. As an associate manager, your job duties include training, directing, and evaluating workers. You may also provide progress reports to higher management and perform administrative tasks as needed. Although the career qualifications vary depending on the employer, you typically need a bachelor’s degree in business administration or a related field and prior management experience. You should also have excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.

How to Become an Associate Manager

The Associate Manager position exists in a wide range of industries, so while exact responsibilities may vary, employers tend to prefer individuals with some form of higher education, specifically in business or marketing. Any prior professional experience in a supervisory role will also benefit you greatly. Associate Managers are responsible for training and supporting other employees, so your previous leadership experience and ability to coach others are key. You may work directly with clients on occasion, so you should possess an aptitude for customer service, communication, and conflict management. Basic computer literacy is expected for this role, especially with Microsoft Office applications. In most cases, Associate Managers must have a valid driver’s license and, depending on the industry, will need a flexible schedule that allows for occasional evening and weekend hours.
