JOB SUMMARY:        The Peer Education Specialist provides outreach, sexual health education, clinical services linkage and referrals to teens. In collaboration with the Teen Clinic Coordinator, this position is responsible for developing the Teen Clinic Peer Education program to prepare teens for comprehensive sexual health presentations in local middle and high schools. The Peer Education Specialist also participates in community outreach and appropriate reproductive health events.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:   (may not include all duties assigned)

  • Assist in the recruitment and training of volunteers for Teen Clinic Advisory Group (existing teen peer education program) Facilitate regular peer educator meetings
  • Create and deliver new and innovative health education trainings for peer educators and coordinate guest speakers as needed.
  • Co-manage existing volunteer group with help of Teen Clinic Coordinator.
  • Provide information on pregnancy and STI/HIV prevention methods at schools and other service sites
  • Facilitate waiting room education program including reproductive health games and informational materials.
  • Assist peer educators in creating and delivering appropriate health education materials as needed in the Teen Clinic, including hand outs and clinic wall displays.
  • Implement sexual health education curriculum in middle school and high school classrooms.
  • Expand access for West Sonoma County youth through interactive presentations at local middle and high schools; incorporate teen volunteers in presentations.
  • Communicate and collaborate with school teachers, administrators and community organizations on implementation of program. Give presentations about the programs and activities in the schools and community
  • Promote improved access to Teen Clinic services through outreach to underserved teens by tabling at community events and social media.
  • Refer teens at schools and other service sites to clinical services and other resources
  • Regularly evaluate and update curriculum materials
  • Document completely and accurately all presentations and activities for tracking and evaluation purposes
  • Collect and evaluate demographic data from all classroom presentations
  • Perform the duties of a Teen Clinic Front Office Specialist, as needed
  • Stay current on adolescent reproductive health issues
  • Attend regular Teen Clinic meetings
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

Education:

  • BA or BS in Health Education, Psychology, Social Work, Education or related field

Experience:

  • Experience providing health education in school settings and/or community health centers
  • Experience working with at-risk adolescents of all ethnic backgrounds in school settings or in agencies providing similar services
  • Current CPR
  • Basic office and equipment safety knowledge and practice
  • Basic computer skills
  • Experience in a community health center setting desirable

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to perform the physical demands of the job.
  • Must be able to move freely about the office and carry light loads (up to 25 pounds).
