  We are seeking a Emergency Room Technician -  Emergency Services who will work closely with all members of the emergency team to provide direct patient care to optimize positive patient care outcomes. Assist the physician/nurse practitioner during procedures by providing the appropriate sutures, supplies, instruments, and equipment. Maintain proper sterile technique during the procedure.   In this position you will have the following responsibilities:
  • Patient Care - Treatment Areas:
    • Take radio reports from incoming ambulances and assign to rooms based on acuity
    • Assist RN with incoming ambulances by preparing patients for physician/NP examinations, and taking initial vital signs
    • Prepare resuscitation rooms for incoming patients requiring resuscitation measures
    • Participate in resuscitation procedures by performing CPR including simple airway maintenance
    • Assist physician and RN in resuscitation procedures such as intubation, central line placement, defibrillation, and chest tube insertion, and external cardiac pacing
    • Obtain repeat vital signs
  • Procedures - Urology:
    • Insertion of Foley catheters
    • Insertion of Monotherm temperature catheters
    • Assist physicians including Urologists with procedures
    • Application of urinary leg bag
  • Note:  Pediatric ER-Tech only assists with Urology procedures
  • *****May NOT perform foley insertion on the following patients:
    • Pregnant patients
    • Patients with blood at the meatus
    • Patients with a history of prostate problems
    • Patients with a history of genitourinary surgery
    • Specialty catheters i.e. coudet
  • Procedures - Wound Care:
    • Wound irrigation
    • Assist with eye irrigation (excluding medication administration).
    • Simple wound compresses
    • Simple burn dressings
    • Assist surgeon with plastic procedures and tendon repair by holding retractors and cutting sutures as directed using proper sterile technique
    • Wound care to patients requiring steri strips
    • Pressure dressings
    • Gelfoam dressings
    • Apply pneumatic cuff to control arterial bleeding
  • Procedures - Clinical Testing:
    • Perform EKGs
    • Perform lab point of care tests: urine dip, urine pregnancy, and blood glucose
    • Patient ambulation to assess oxygen saturation
    • Patient ambulation to help establish disposition
    • Perform phlebotomy (Note: Pediatric ER-Tech does not perform phlebotomy)
    • Perform bladder scanning
  • Procedures - Orthopedics:
    • Apply appropriate plaster or fiberglass splints to stabilize extremity fractures.
    • Apply and size a number of orthopedic devices including post op shoes, knee and shoulder immobilizers, and ace wraps
    • Assist physicians in closed reductions
    • Apply external femoral traction
  • General Patient Care:
    • Assist patients with dressing, undressing, eating, and bathing
    • Physically secure violent patients needing restraint
    • Transport patients to all areas of the hospital
  • Education and Leadership:
    • Attend department meetings to stay informed and assist with issue resolution
    • Participate in committees and work groups
    • Attend required yearly education
    • Assist with training of new ED techs and employees
  • General:
    • Demonstrate competency in the performance of procedures and information systems according to department policy
    • Demonstrate effective priority setting and organizational skills to promote department flow and cost efficiency
    • Utilize appropriate forms
    • Document pertinent patient care information accurately, legibly and concisely, according to department policy
    • Perform basic patient observation skills and reports significant abnormalities/changes to RN and/or physician/NP
    • Reinforce RN patient teaching in support of the interdisciplinary treatment plan
    • Demonstrate commitment to teamwork:
      • Contribute to the team to meet department needs

      • Carry fair share of the workload
      • Coordinate patient care with other disciplines
    • Demonstrate knowledge and support of quality improvement goals

    • Demonstrate department accountability:
      • Contribute to and attends 50-75% of department staff meetings (varies by facility)
      •  Participate in department projects or committees
      • Use downtime productively
      • Complete charges correctly
      • Provide ongoing feedback to peers and completes peer review tools when requested
      • Utilize and maintains supplies to minimize waste and over use.
    • Accountable to department staffing needs:
      • Demonstrate flexibility and initiative to fill shifts cost effectively.
      • Contribute to unexpected staffing needs
    • Other duties as assigned including HEALTH UNIT COORDINATOR (HUC) as applicable. This position provides overall administrative and technical assistance and support in the operation of the ED. The Health Unit Coordinator's duties fall within these main categories: clerical, communication and coordination of unit activities
Required qualifications for this position includes:
  • Current or previous EMT, Paramedic, Completion of Medical Assistant Program -OR- CNA certificate -OR- Skills acquired through military or surgical tech experience -OR- completion of ED tech residency program through Providence Oregon Emergency Services
  • Basic American Heart Association - Basic Life Support (AHA - BLS)
  • Prevention and Management of Assaultive Behavior (PMAB) Annually
  • One (1) Year relevant experience 
    • Patient care -OR- clinical experience 
    • Experience acquired during certification or licensure process, military experience as medical personnel or senior clinical nursing student
