About This Opportunity

Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre (CRHCC) is seeking a primary care obstetrics physician to join their team. Like the other primary physicians, the successful candidate will cover their own inpatients during the week, with general sign-out to each other on the weekends. The physicians also have back-up from respiratory therapy (off-site) and an on-site emergency medicine physician. There are neonatal resuscitation program courses offered on-site, where many nurses are trained with advanced life support in obstetrics (ALSO) and lactation courses. CRHCC opened to patients in 2002. It provides high-quality, efficient care to residents of Amherst and surrounding areas as well as specialty services for residents of Cumberland County. Located in Upper Nappan just on the outskirts of Amherst, CRHCC has 46 inpatient beds. It offers a wide range of programs and services including primary and secondary services through in-patient, outpatient, and satellites:

  • dietary and nutrition services
  • emergency medicine

The facility sees an estimated 180 - 260 deliveries a year, with numbers increasing with a stable epidural service and specialist coverage from two talented obstetricians. For the successful candidate, established primary physicians would plan to be available for the first few deliveries.

Responsibilities
  • provide prenatal clinic care one day a week, staffed with an obstetrical nurse 
  • provide inpatient coverage at CRHCC
  • participate in perinatal care, outpatient visits, and follow-up visits
  • provide neonatal care (with the intention to limit deliveries to 36 weeks and no GA) and neonatal resuscitation
  • cover low-risk deliveries perform cesarean surgical assists
Expected Hours
  • full-time, part-time, and locums
  • coverage of own inpatients during the week, with general sign-out to others on the weekends
Qualifications
  • all family physicians must be eligible for certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)
  • all applicants must be eligible for licensure with the  College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS)
  • membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA)
  • current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
  • current Advances in Labour and Risk Management (ALARM)
