Primary Objective: Under minimal supervision, performs para-professional work in a science laboratory in the preparation, storage and maintenance of chemical and bio-chemical reagents, materials, and apparatus; takes general responsibility for operation of laboratory; and performs related duties as required.
 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Inventories and maintains necessary supplies for college courses in biology, chemistry, physics, physical science and related subjects.

2. Writes requisitions for chemicals, supplies, equipment, and laboratory animals.

3. Prepares reagents with qualitative and quantitative specifications.

4. Maintains and does minor repair on various laboratory equipment.

5. Calibrates and prepares scientific instrumentation for class use.

6. Prepares bacteriological culture media and prepares class experiments by making solutions, organizing the necessary equipment and pre-testing it before it is demonstrated to the class.

7. Feeds and provides daily care for live laboratory animals.

8. Assembles equipment and supplies for other natural science laboratories.

9. Receives, stores, and distributes laboratory equipment, chemicals and supplies.

10. Maintains the laboratory in an orderly and clean manner that ensures safety rules.

11. Writes educational documentation as needed.

12. Enforces safety rules in the laboratory and aides the instructor and students in demonstrations.

13. Supervises, trains, schedules, and evaluates staff of student laboratory assistants.

14. Adheres to CCC Customer Service Excellence standards.

15. Performs related duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Graduation from high school or the equivalent, supplemented by two years of college chemistry, laboratory biology or photography; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

2. Considerable knowledge of routine laboratory procedures and safety.

3. Good knowledge of biological or chemical and physical science laboratory methods.

4. Knowledge of scientific instrumentation used in science laboratories.

5. Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of subordinates.

6. Ability to use a personal computer in all inventory and record keeping responsibilities.

7. Ability to instruct students on use of laboratory equipment through use of strong organizational skills, supervisory skills and good verbal communication.
