Job description

About You and The Role

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Financial Platform team, you will build systems that turn Zipline's operational activity into accurate, auditable financial records. Flights, deliveries, inventory movements, manufacturing events, and partner transactions must be billed, settled, reconciled, and recorded correctly for Zipline to operate and scale globally.

Your immediate priority is strengthening the operational-event-to-financial-record workflow: creating traceable, automated paths from real-world activity through billing, settlement, reconciliation, and ERP recording. You will work directly with Finance, Commercial, Manufacturing, Operations, Data, and Marketplace Engineering to replace manual processes with durable software.

What You'll Do
  • Design and build backend services and full stack apps for financial event processing, billing, pricing, taxation, settlements, reconciliation, inventory costing, and ledger workflows.
  • Build idempotent, replayable, ordered, and auditable event-driven systems that trace each transaction from an operational event through accounting.
  • Translate accounting, finance operations, and commercial workflows into scalable software in partnership with domain stakeholders.
  • Integrate operational systems with our custom ERP system, payment providers, tax engines, banking systems, manufacturing systems, and partner platforms.
  • Automate reconciliation and manual accounting workflows to reduce settlement errors, improve financial accuracy, and accelerate month-end close.
  • Own reliable APIs, data models, service boundaries, observability, service-health metrics, and runbooks for correctness-critical production services.
  • Drive technical design, review code and designs, mentor engineers, and lead projects from concept through production.
What You'll Bring
  • 5+ years building production backend systems and owning reliable services at scale.
  • Strong distributed-systems design skills, including thoughtful data modeling, API design, and pragmatic architectural tradeoffs.
  • A rigorous approach to consistency, idempotency, transactional integrity, event ordering, failure recovery, and financial correctness.
  • Experience working directly with business stakeholders to understand complex workflows and deliver practical software solutions.
  • Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation and improve reliability through observability, incident reviews, and automation.
  • Regular on-site presence in South San Francisco to partner closely with Finance and engineering teams.
  • Prior experience with billing, payments, ERP integrations, reconciliation, accounting systems, ledgers, or marketplace settlements is strongly preferred; it is not required
What Else You Need To Know

The starting cash range for this role is $150,000 - $230,000. Please note that this is a target, starting cash range for a candidate who meets the minimum qualifications for this role. The final cash pay for this role will depend on a variety of factors, including a specific candidate's experience, qualifications, skills, working location, and projected impact. The total compensation package for this role may also include: equity compensation; discretionary annual or performance bonuses; sales incentives; benefits such as medical, dental and vision insurance; paid time off; and more.
