Job description

Lumber Yard Operations Specialist
Location: Lakeville, CT
Company: Ed Herrington, Inc.
Position Summary
Ed Herrington, Inc. is seeking a detail-oriented and organized Lumber Yard Operations Specialist to support our Lakeville, CT Yard, warehouse, receiving, inventory control, and delivery operations. This position plays a key role in coordinating delivery schedules for lumber, building materials, millwork, kitchen amp; bath products, and specialty items under the direction of the Dispatch Manager.
The successful candidate will help ensure accurate inventory management, efficient receiving and shipping processes, timely customer deliveries, and exceptional customer service. This role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively across departments.
Key Responsibilities
Inventory Control amp; Cycle Counting
  • Manage the Lakeville Yard cycle count process and serve as a resource to other locations as needed.
  • Conduct inventory counts throughout yard and warehouse areas.
  • Research inventory discrepancies, identify root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Request inventory replenishment when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records and control processes.
  • Support yard operations and warehouse activities as assigned.
Receiving amp; Inventory Management
  • Receive and process all yard merchandise, including stock and special-order items.
  • Verify incoming shipments against bills of lading, invoices, purchase orders, and other documentation.
  • Enter detailed receiving information into the company operating system on the day of receipt.
  • Inspect shipments for damage, shortages, or discrepancies and coordinate resolution with vendors and shippers.
  • Process jobsite returns, verify quantities and condition of materials, and complete customer credits in Spruce.
  • Coordinate vendor returns and inter-company transfers, ensuring accurate documentation and system updates.
  • Maintain special-order inventory areas by properly storing, labeling, and communicating receipt of sold items to appropriate departments.
  • Ensure receiving, warehouse, and work areas remain organized, safe, and efficient.
Dispatch amp; Delivery Coordination
  • Schedule and coordinate deliveries using the Spruce delivery program.
  • Monitor delivery schedules and maintain accurate on-time delivery metrics.
  • Work closely with the Dispatch Manager, store management, warehouse teams, and drivers to coordinate deliveries and material flow.
  • Communicate with customers regarding delivery schedules, special requests, and issue resolution.
  • Investigate delayed deliveries and coordinate corrective actions when necessary.
  • Resolve delivery errors promptly and arrange customer returns within established timelines.
  • Perform load checks before deliveries are released to drivers.
  • Maintain regular communication with drivers throughout delivery routes.
Customer Service amp; Team Support
  • Provide outstanding customer service by addressing delivery concerns and resolving issues efficiently.
  • Assist with Yard Sales counter operations as needed.
  • Support warehouse and driver activities as assigned.
  • Participate in required training programs.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to teamwork, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Recommend process improvements to enhance operational efficiency.
Qualifications
Education amp; Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Six months to one year of related experience and/or training preferred.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
Skills amp; Abilities
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Effective communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic computer skills and experience with inventory or dispatch systems preferred.
  • Ability to investigate and resolve inventory, receiving, and delivery discrepancies.
  • Forklift or material handling equipment experience is a plus.
