Who owns xAPI?

xAPI, also known as Experience API or Tin Can API, is an open standard developed by ADL (Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative), a research organization sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense. It is maintained and supported by the ADL community, which includes industry stakeholders and developers. Ownership of the standard is shared among its contributors and the community that implements and evolves it.

How does an xAPI specialist typically collaborate with instructional designers and developers in a learning technology project?

An xAPI specialist works closely with instructional designers to identify the types of learner interactions and data points that should be tracked for meaningful analytics. They also partner with developers to ensure that learning activities and platforms are properly instrumented to send xAPI statements to a Learning Record Store (LRS). Regular collaboration involves aligning on project requirements, troubleshooting tracking issues, and optimizing data collection to support learning outcomes and reporting needs. Effective communication and a shared understanding of both technical and educational goals are key to successful project delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an xAPI (Experience API) Developer, and why are they important?

Job description

Anduril Industries is a defense technology company with a mission to transform U.S. and allied military capabilities with advanced technology. By bringing the expertise, technology, and business model of the 21st century's most innovative companies to the defense industry, Anduril is changing how military systems are designed, built and sold. Anduril's family of systems is powered by Lattice OS, an AI-powered operating system that turns thousands of data streams into a realtime, 3D command and control center. As the world enters an era of strategic competition, Anduril is committed to bringing cutting-edge autonomy, AI, computer vision, sensor fusion, and networking technology to the military in months, not years.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Anduril Industries is seeking a highly skilled and strategic Training Systems Engineer to design, implement, and manage our next-generation learning ecosystem. This role is pivotal in building the technical foundation that will enable sophisticated, data-driven learning experiences across the organization.
The Training Systems Engineer will be the technical owner of our learning technology stack, responsible for the seamless integration of our Learning Management System (LMS), a new Learning Record Store (LRS), and advanced xAPI-enabled training simulators. The ideal candidate is a technical expert, a strategic thinker, and a master of system integration who is passionate about creating a robust and scalable learning infrastructure.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • System Architecture & Integration:
    • Architect and oversee the end-to-end integration of our learning technology stack, centered on MapleLMS, a third-party LRS, training simulators, and our Salesforce CRM.
    • Lead the vendor selection, evaluation, and implementation process for our enterprise Learning Record Store (LRS).
    • Manage vendor relationships, ensuring accountability, adherence to SLAs, and a strong partnership for ongoing system success and support.
  • xAPI & CMI5 Management:
    • Define and manage the data architecture for xAPI-based training simulator data, ensuring it flows accurately and meaningfully into the LMS/LRS.
    • Design, document, and maintain CMI5/xAPI statement structures and call protocols for all integrated systems to ensure data consistency and integrity.
    • Act as the primary technical point of contact for troubleshooting CMI5/xAPI data flow and integration issues between simulators and the LRS/LMS.
  • Ongoing Operations & Expansion:
    • Develop and document a standardized process for integrating future training simulators into the established learning ecosystem, providing technical guidance and support to internal or external development teams.
    • Collaborate closely with our internal Business Systems group to troubleshoot, maintain, and expand the integration between the LMS and our Salesforce CRM.
    • Serve as the subject matter expert on the technical capabilities, limitations, and potential of the learning platform stack, advising stakeholders on best practices.
    • Proactively identify and solve complex platform challenges, recommending improvements and future-proofing the architecture.
  • Collaboration & Data Integration:
    • Collaborate with the Simulation Development SWEs from various business lines to provide feedback on and effectively utilize the core development pipeline, frameworks, and SDKs.
    • Influence and guide the CMI5/xAPI tracking points throughout training simulation experiences using the provided data-instrumentation libraries, ensuring all critical learner actions are captured for analysis.
WHAT THE ROLE IS NOT
To ensure clarity, this role is explicitly not responsible for:
  • Content Creation: You will not be designing or developing training courses, eLearning modules, or other learning content.
  • Simulator Development: This role does not involve programming or building the training simulators themselves. Your focus is on mapping and integrating the data they produce.
  • Engineering/Design Systems Support: Your focus is on the training technology stack, not the systems or simulators used for engineering product design or development (though your experience and guidance will be consulted).
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in a technical role focused on learning technologies (e.g., Learning Systems Architect, L&D Technologist, Senior LMS Integration Specialist).
  • Deep, hands-on expertise with xAPI and CMI5 specifications, including statement design, profile creation, and troubleshooting.
  • Proven experience with Learning Record Stores (LRS), including selection, implementation, and management (e.g., Watershed, Yet Analytics, Learning Locker).
  • Demonstrable experience architecting and managing integrations between multiple enterprise systems (LMS, LRS, HRIS, CRM) using APIs.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose complex technical issues across a stack of systems.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret security clearance.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Direct administrative and integration experience with Moodle.
  • Experience integrating learning systems specifically with Salesforce CRM.
  • Familiarity with simulation development environments and how they output data.
  • Working knowledge of other learning standards (e.g., SCORM, AICC).
  • Experience with vendor management, including RFI/RFP processes and contract negotiation.
  • Experience using API testing tools like Postman.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) for reporting on LRS data.
  • Familiarity with defense, aerospace, robotics, or software systems.
  • Experience developing effective, learner-centered solutions that go beyond traditional slide-based instruction (e.g., AR/VR, simulations, blended learning).
  • Work history with complex engineering or operations-focused companies or Department of Defense.
