What are learning platforms?

Learning platforms are digital tools or software systems designed to facilitate education and training. They provide a centralized space for delivering online courses, tracking learner progress, managing educational content, and fostering interaction between instructors and students. Popular examples include Learning Management Systems (LMS) like Moodle, Canvas, and Blackboard. These platforms are widely used by schools, universities, and businesses to support both in-person and remote learning environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Learning Platforms Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Learning Platforms Specialist, you need expertise in instructional design, digital learning strategies, and a background in education or learning technologies. Familiarity with Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Moodle, Blackboard, or Canvas, as well as relevant certifications like ATD or CompTIA CTT+, is typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for supporting educators and learners effectively. These competencies ensure efficient implementation, user engagement, and continuous improvement of digital learning environments.

What is the difference between Learning Platforms vs Instructional Designers?

AspectLearning PlatformsInstructional Designers
Required CredentialsTypically no specific certifications required; familiarity with e-learning toolsOften hold degrees in education, instructional design, or related fields; certifications like CPT or ISTD common
Work EnvironmentOnline, tech-driven environments; often part of e-learning companies or educational institutionsEducational or corporate settings; design and develop learning experiences
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by educational institutions, corporations, and e-learning providersEmployed by schools, universities, corporate training departments

Learning Platforms focus on providing the technological infrastructure for online learning, while Instructional Designers create the content and structure of educational programs. Both roles are essential in e-learning but serve different functions within the education and training industry.

How does a Learning Platforms Specialist typically collaborate with educators and technical teams to implement new features or updates?

A Learning Platforms Specialist often acts as a bridge between educators who use the platform and the technical teams responsible for its development. They gather feedback from instructors, students, and administrators to understand their needs, then communicate these requirements to developers or IT staff. Regular meetings and collaborative planning sessions are common, ensuring that new features or updates align with educational goals and user experience standards. This cross-functional collaboration helps ensure that platform enhancements are both technically feasible and pedagogically effective.

Digital Solutions Manager (Recruiting Tech & Learning Platforms) Opportunity

This role sits within People Experience & AI transformation and serves as the strategic technical and functional capability lead for Okta's Recruiting and Learning ecosystem. As a Digital Solutions Manager with deep expertise in enterprise systems, integrations, automation, data architecture, and AI, you will define and execute the technology vision that enables scalable hiring, workforce development, and organizational growth.

In this role, you will establish the long-term technical and technical strategy for recruiting and learning systems, ensuring our platforms, integrations, data architecture, and AI capabilities work together seamlessly to support global operations. You will translate business priorities into scalable technical solutions, balancing user experience, operational efficiency, governance, and future-state innovation.

You will operate at the intersection of systems architecture, automation, and user experience-building solutions that improve efficiency, enable better decision-making, and support global growth. This role also requires strong AI fluency, with a focus on leveraging AI-driven capabilities to enhance recruiting processes, learning experiences, and operational automation.

What You'll Own

  • Roadmap & Systems: Define & execute the roadmap for Recruiting and Learning systems, ensuring alignment with business goals. Serve as the primary SME across ATS, CRM, LMS and AI tools. Design scalable, future-ready architectures, evaluate emerging technologies, and translate complex business needs into strategic technical solutions through partnership with People Technology and Business leaders.
  • Integrations, Automation & Optimization: Partner with Technology teams to define requirements for integrations across systems using APIs, middleware, and data pipelines. Drive automation of manual processes across recruiting and learning workflows to improve efficiency and reduce operational overhead. Lead the business side of system implementations-including requirements gathering, process mapping, User Acceptance Testing (UAT), and change management/readiness-while partnering with the technology team for solution design, configuration, and deployment. Continuously identify opportunities to streamline workflows and improve system performance.
  • Data Integrity, Reporting & Insights: Establish and maintain data integrity standards, validation rules, and monitoring processes. Ensure data accuracy, accessibility, and consistency across systems. Partner with analytics teams to align on reporting frameworks and enable actionable insights.
  • AI Enablement & Innovation: Leverage AI-enabled capabilities (e.g., candidate matching, chatbots, recommendations, content generation) to optimize recruiting and learning processes. Evaluate and implement AI-driven tools and features across systems. Identify high-impact use cases for AI to improve efficiency, personalization, and decision-making. Partner with stakeholders to drive responsible and scalable adoption of AI solutions.
  • Troubleshooting, Governance & Best Practices: Troubleshoot complex system issues and perform root cause analysis using structured problem-solving approaches. Partner with IT and Security to ensure system reliability, compliance, and scalability. Establish and document best practices for system configuration, usage, and maintenance. Maintain comprehensive technical documentation (system architecture, data flows, configurations).
  • Leadership & Cross-Functional Impact: Act as a technical subject matter expert for recruiting and learning systems within People. Partner with Recruiting and Learning & Development teams to translate business needs into technical solutions. Collaborate with Business Technology / IT on integrations, architecture, and system performance. Engage with vendors and external partners to support implementations and roadmap alignment. Support global users through issue resolution, training, and documentation to drive adoption and effectiveness.

What You'll Bring

  • Deep expertise in recruiting systems (ATS, CRM, interview platforms) and Learning Management Systems (LMS)
  • Strong experience in system configuration, architecture, and administration
  • Experience leading system implementations and managing medium-to-large complexity technical initiatives
  • Strong understanding of data models, reporting, and system governance
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex issues and perform root cause analysis
  • Experience leveraging automation to improve operational efficiency
  • AI fluency, including familiarity with AI/ML applications and AI-enabled features in recruiting and learning platforms
  • Ability to operate independently in ambiguous environments and translate business needs into technical solutions

Why This Role Matters

This role is foundational to how Okta scales its recruiting and learning capabilities. You will build and maintain the systems that enable efficient hiring, effective learning, and data-driven decision-making across the organization. Your work will directly impact operational efficiency, user experience, and the company's ability to grow with the right talent and capabilities.
