What are learning platforms?

Learning platforms are digital tools or software systems designed to facilitate education and training. They provide a centralized space for delivering online courses, tracking learner progress, managing educational content, and fostering interaction between instructors and students. Popular examples include Learning Management Systems (LMS) like Moodle, Canvas, and Blackboard. These platforms are widely used by schools, universities, and businesses to support both in-person and remote learning environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Learning Platforms Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Learning Platforms Specialist, you need expertise in instructional design, digital learning strategies, and a background in education or learning technologies. Familiarity with Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Moodle, Blackboard, or Canvas, as well as relevant certifications like ATD or CompTIA CTT+, is typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for supporting educators and learners effectively. These competencies ensure efficient implementation, user engagement, and continuous improvement of digital learning environments.

What is the difference between Learning Platforms vs Instructional Designers?

AspectLearning PlatformsInstructional Designers

Work EnvironmentOnline, tech-driven environments; often part of e-learning companies or educational institutionsEducational or corporate settings; design and develop learning experiences
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by educational institutions, corporations, and e-learning providersEmployed by schools, universities, corporate training departments

Learning Platforms focus on providing the technological infrastructure for online learning, while Instructional Designers create the content and structure of educational programs. Both roles are essential in e-learning but serve different functions within the education and training industry.

How does a Learning Platforms Specialist typically collaborate with educators and technical teams to implement new features or updates?

A Learning Platforms Specialist often acts as a bridge between educators who use the platform and the technical teams responsible for its development. They gather feedback from instructors, students, and administrators to understand their needs, then communicate these requirements to developers or IT staff. Regular meetings and collaborative planning sessions are common, ensuring that new features or updates align with educational goals and user experience standards. This cross-functional collaboration helps ensure that platform enhancements are both technically feasible and pedagogically effective.
