Job description

Description
The IT Specialist is a hybrid role on American Freight's small, fast-moving IT team, splitting time between hands-on technical support for corporate and store associates and higher-value work that helps drive the business forward - including eCommerce platform support, business process optimization, and applying AI tools to improve how the company operates. This is a great opportunity for a motivated, curious professional to build broad, hands-on IT experience across every discipline - infrastructure, applications, eCommerce, and business systems - while helping shape how a growing furniture retailer uses technology to compete.
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
• Provide first- and second-level technical support to corporate and store associates, resolving hardware, software, network, and point-of-sale issues (approximately 50% of role)
• Support and help optimize americanfreight.com, our Shopify-based eCommerce platform, partnering with IT leadership on testing, troubleshooting, and enhancements
• Identify and help implement business process improvements across IT and store operations, using automation tools such as Microsoft Power Automate
• Explore and apply AI tools and techniques (e.g., the Claude API) to streamline reporting, support workflows, and business decision-making
• Document, deploy, and support a range of technologies across corporate and store environments
• Partner across the IT team - systems, networking, applications, and eCommerce - gaining hands-on exposure to every layer of the technology stack
• Maintain current knowledge of relevant hardware, software, and emerging technologies, including AI-driven tools
• Contribute ideas and adapt quickly in an agile, fast-paced environment where a small team covers a wide range of responsibilities
• Accurately document support tickets, process changes, and technical procedures
• Participate in on-call rotation for evening/weekend support as needed
• Other duties as assigned
Required Skills:
• 1-2+ years of hands-on experience in IT support, help desk, or a related technical role - no specific degree required; relevant experience and demonstrated skills matter most
• Strong troubleshooting skills across PC/Mac, mobile devices, peripherals, and business applications
• Genuine curiosity about AI tools and a desire to apply them to real business problems
• Comfort working on a small, fast-paced team where priorities and responsibilities shift often
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for supporting end users at all levels
• Ability to analyze processes and identify opportunities for improvement or automation
• Self-starter mentality - comfortable learning new systems and taking initiative with minimal oversight
• Familiarity with retail or eCommerce environments a plus
Preferred Skills:
• Experience with Shopify or another eCommerce platform
• Exposure to Microsoft Power Automate, Power BI, or similar automation/reporting tools
• Experience using AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude) for business or technical tasks
• Active Directory user/computer account management; Microsoft, A+, or Security+ certifications a plus (not required)
