Job description

The Town of Acton is seeking to add two dynamic, adaptive and experienced Library Assistant Is to our team at the Acton Memorial Library. These roles are Part-Time and non-benefitted and directly report to the Head of Patron Services. Acton is an increasingly diverse town of about 25,000 residents. Customer service experience is highly valued.
General Duties and Responsibilities: These positions will perform the basic duties related to the circulation of library materials, including but not limited to checking materials in and out, renewing materials, issuing and updating library cards, collecting fines and charges for lost materials, answering the phone and routing calls, re-shelving carts of books, and giving direction within the library. Additionally, these positions perform all other duties as assigned at the discretion of the supervisor.
Minimum Entrance Requirements: High School diploma or equivalency; one (1) year direct work experience with the Public and working with computers; demonstrated attention to detail; communications and public service skills; experience working with different cultures; experience in basic computer troubleshooting. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and strong soft skills. Applicants must be able to stand, bend, stoop, and reach throughout significant portions of a 4-8-hour shift and push a fully loaded book truck.
Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience in an automated library; prior experience in a customer service environment; experience using Canva; additional education; fluency in another language besides English; experience with integrated library systems (ILS).
Schedule Information
The Library is currently hiring for two part-time schedules:

  • One position averaging approximately 10 hours per week
  • One position averaging approximately 15 hours per week
Schedules vary based on operational needs and include a combination of weekday, evening, and weekend hours. Required shifts include:
  • One evening shift per week
  • One Saturday shift in every three-week rotation
  • One Sunday shift in every three-week rotation from early October through mid-June (paid at time and a half)

Additional flexibility for occasional after-hours programs or community events is preferred.
Pay Rate: Starting at $24.98 - $28.12/hour depending upon qualifications
