Job description

About the role

Point is seeking an experienced Vice President of Legal to lead and scale its in-house legal function. This role is critical to the continued growth of Point's proprietary home equity investment business and broader platform. The VP, Legal will report directly to the COO and partner closely with senior leadership across the company.

This is a hands-on leadership role for a lawyer-operator who is passionate about building and running a best-in-class in-house legal team. The VP, Legal will own the day-to-day delivery of legal services to the business while designing the structures, processes, and norms required to scale a growing legal organization.

The ideal candidate brings experience from high-growth, VC-backed companies, thrives in complex and highly regulated environments, and views the legal function as a service organization that enables the business to move quickly and responsibly.

*This role requires the ability to attend in-person meetings at our headquarters on an as-needed basis; candidates are expected to reside within a reasonable commuting distance (approximately 50 miles from our Palo Alto HQ)*

Your responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the in-house legal function, serving as the primary owner of day-to-day legal execution across the business.
  • Build, hire, and develop a high-performing legal team, including mentoring, performance management, career development, and thoughtful org design as the company scales.
  • Establish and continuously improve legal team structures, processes, and operating norms that enable speed, consistency, and high-quality decision-making.
  • Act as a trusted internal client-service partner to business leaders, delivering practical, business-oriented legal advice with strong judgment and responsiveness.
  • Oversee legal support across a broad range of disciplines, including:
      • Product and regulatory counseling
      • Government affairs
      • Consumer finance and mortgage-related matters
      • Employment and HR support
      • Commercial contracting
      • Privacy and data protection
      • Corporate governance and securities
      • Capital markets and structured finance
      • Litigation and dispute management
  • Partner closely with the COO and executive team on risk management, strategic initiatives, and scaling the company's operating model.
  • Design and implement legal operations capabilities, including intake workflows, prioritization frameworks, outside counsel management, budgeting, and knowledge management.
  • Manage and optimize the use of outside counsel, ensuring cost discipline, clear accountability, and alignment with business objectives.

About you

  • 10+ years of legal experience, including substantial in-house experience at high-growth and/or VC-backed companies.
  • Demonstrated success building, managing, and scaling legal teams, including hiring, coaching, and developing lawyers and legal professionals.
  • A genuine passion for the in-house legal function and a clear point of view on what "excellent" internal legal service looks like.
  • Strong familiarity with consumer finance and residential mortgage products, or closely related regulated financial products, and the regulatory frameworks that govern them.
  • Broad legal exposure across multiple disciplines, with the ability to operate as a pragmatic generalist while knowing when to go deep.
  • Exceptional client-service orientation, with the ability to translate legal risk into clear, actionable business guidance.
  • Strong operational instincts, including experience building repeatable processes, systems, and norms that scale.
  • Excellent judgment, communication, negotiation, and drafting skills.
  • Comfort operating in fast-paced, ambiguous, and evolving environments, with the ability to balance risk management and velocity.
  • JD from an accredited law school and admission to the State Bar of California, or eligibility for the in-house counsel exemption.
