THIS IS AN UNPAID VOLUNTEERING ROLE.
Role Title: Web Designer
Role Nature: Volunteer (Unpaid)
Location: Remote
Reports to: Head of Communications (via Senior Communications Manager)
Collaborates with: Web Developers, IT Support, Editorial Team
Role Overview
The Blockchain & Climate Institute (BCI) is seeking a volunteer Web Designer to help reimagine how we present our work to the world. This role focuses on visual storytelling, user experience, and content layout - with an emphasis on mobile-friendly, accessible design and strategic communication.
You'll work closely with BCI's Communications team to design high-impact webpages that support international events, research publications, blog features, and campaigns. This is a design-forward role. You won't be expected to code, but you'll be responsible for owning the visual direction of the site in close coordination with developers.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design new modules and layouts for BCI's WordPress-based website
  • Create dynamic, visually compelling pages for events, campaigns, and announcements
  • Develop wireframes and mockups in alignment with communications goals
  • Ensure consistency in style, typography, and tone across web content
  • Work with developers to bring your designs to life and troubleshoot visual issues
  • Propose design improvements that enhance accessibility, responsiveness, and visual clarity
  • Participate in briefings with the Head of Communications and editorial team to align visual narratives with strategic messaging

Requirements
Experience & Skills
  • Strong portfolio of web design projects, preferably in nonprofit or policy settings
  • Proficiency in design tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, or Canva Pro'

  • Knowledge of WIX is considered a necessity
  • Solid understanding of UI/UX principles and mobile-first design
  • Ability to interpret a comms brief and turn it into an engaging visual experience
  • Strong attention to layout, detail, and branding consistency
  • Experience working with content management systems (WordPress preferred)
  • Collaborative attitude with the ability to take direction while contributing original ideas
