What is volunteer accounting?

Volunteer accounting involves providing accounting or bookkeeping services on a voluntary, unpaid basis, often for nonprofit organizations, community groups, or charities. Volunteers help with tasks such as recording financial transactions, preparing budgets, reconciling bank statements, and generating financial reports. Their work ensures that organizations maintain accurate financial records and meet regulatory requirements. This role is critical for nonprofits that may not have the resources to hire professional accountants.

What is the difference between Volunteer Accounting vs Bookkeeper?

AspectVolunteer AccountingBookkeeper
CredentialsMay not require formal certifications, but accounting knowledge is preferredOften requires basic bookkeeping skills; certifications like QuickBooks are common
Work EnvironmentNonprofit organizations, charities, community groupsBusinesses, small companies, and organizations
Employer & IndustryNonprofits, volunteer organizationsPrivate companies, small businesses

Volunteer Accounting and Bookkeeper roles both involve managing financial records, but Volunteer Accounting typically focuses on nonprofit settings and may not require formal certifications. Bookkeepers are more commonly employed in business environments and often need specific bookkeeping skills or certifications. Understanding these differences helps individuals choose the role that best fits their skills and career goals.

How to break into accounting without experience?

Breaking into accounting without experience involves gaining relevant skills through courses in accounting, bookkeeping, or finance, and obtaining certifications such as the CPA or CMA. Volunteering for nonprofit organizations or internships can provide practical experience, and developing proficiency with accounting software like QuickBooks or Excel can improve employability.

How do I become a NICU cuddler?

To become a NICU cuddler, you typically need to volunteer through a hospital or neonatal unit that offers cuddling programs. Requirements often include completing a volunteer application, undergoing a background check, and attending an orientation or training session focused on infant care and hospital policies.

What types of tasks can I expect to handle as a volunteer accountant, and how do these differ from paid accounting roles?

As a volunteer accountant, you’ll typically manage tasks such as bookkeeping, preparing financial statements, assisting with budgeting, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations for nonprofit organizations. Unlike paid accounting roles, you may work more independently or in smaller teams, and often need to adapt to varied record-keeping systems or limited resources. Volunteer roles also offer a chance to collaborate closely with program staff and board members, providing insights that can directly support the organization’s mission. This experience can enhance your professional skills while allowing you to make a meaningful impact in your community.

Can you make $500,000 a year as an accountant?

Volunteer accountants typically do not earn salaries, as their work is unpaid. For paid accounting roles, reaching a $500,000 annual income is uncommon and usually requires executive-level positions, extensive experience, specialized skills, or ownership of a firm. Most accountants earn significantly less, with high earners often working in senior management or consulting roles with advanced certifications like CPA or CMA.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Volunteer Accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Volunteer Accountant, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, bookkeeping, and financial reporting, often supported by relevant coursework or experience. Familiarity with accounting software like QuickBooks or Excel, and sometimes knowledge of nonprofit accounting systems, is typically required. Strong attention to detail, reliability, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure accurate financial management and transparency, which are critical for supporting the mission and operations of volunteer-driven organizations.

Can you earn money from volunteering?

Volunteer accounting roles are typically unpaid positions focused on providing financial support or services without compensation. While volunteers do not earn money, some organizations may offer stipends or reimbursements for expenses, but these are not considered wages. To earn income in accounting, a paid position or certification is required.

Organization Summary

WomenVenture is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to empower women to achieve their economic goals by building profitable and sustainable businesses that transform communities. We execute on this mission through providing clients access to business capital, coaching, and community. Our core values are to make meaningful change, to engage with empathy, and to persist boldly, and we seek out candidates who exemplify these characteristics.

Why Volunteer

Support women and entrepreneurs from communities historically excluded from financial systems. Help small business owners strengthen their finances and move closer to accessing capital. Use your QuickBooks skills in a mission-driven, collaborative environment. Contribute to long-term economic stability and community wealth-building.

Role Overview

QuickBooks Education Volunteers help small business owners build confidence using QuickBooks and sound bookkeeping practices. Volunteers partner with WomenVenture’s Programs team to deliver accessible, practical education for growing small businesses ready to level up their accounting practices.
This is a teaching and coaching role, not a professional services role. Volunteers do not provide accounting, tax, or legal services. Volunteers will be matched to projects based on interest, experience, and availability and work closely with the Programs team. Some activities may be volunteer-led while others support staff-led programming.

Available Volunteer Roles:

Volunteers will be matched with one or more focus areas based on interest and experience

  1. Cohort-Based QuickBooks Trainer: Lead or co-facilitate WomenVenture’s monthly QuickBooks cohort training course using WomenVenture’s curriculum. Support participants through guided practice, discussion, and Q&A, and provide feedback on curriculum effectiveness. Training courses are held virtually in the evenings twice a month.
  2. 1:1 Client Coach: Provide educational coaching to help clients use QuickBooks or other bookkeeping systems, improve accounting habits, review books, understand trends, and prepare for future planning using a “teach-with”, not “do-for” approach. Coaching is typically held virtually during daytime hours, or as schedule allows for volunteer and coach.
  3. Tools & Resource Developer: Support the creation or improvement of client tools and learning resources such as tutorials, guides, or templates. This volunteer role work can be accomplished as schedule and time allows.

What You Bring

  • Experience in bookkeeping, accounting, finance, or related fields
  • Expertise with QuickBooks
  • Ability to explain financial concepts clearly and patiently
  • Supportive, collaborative communication style
  • Experience working with small businesses

Time Commitment & Onboarding

A six-month commitment is required. Approximately 4–6 hours per month. Orientation and onboarding are required before working with clients. WomenVenture will offer ongoing support and check-ins.

Boundaries of the Role

Volunteers do not file taxes or prepare official financial statements, provide legal, tax, or compliance advice, or serve as a client’s accountant or bookkeeper of record. All volunteer support is educational in nature.

Client Profile

WomenVenture is a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) serving women and gender-diverse entrepreneurs (18+) in Minnesota and Western Wisconsin who have been traditionally underserved by mainstream financial systems. Many clients are low- to moderate-income, BIPOC and/or women entrepreneurs, early-stage or growing business owners, and not yet able to access traditional financing. Clients are motivated to strengthen their financial systems to build sustainable businesses and become better positioned to access capital.

Client Confidentiality

This position requires access to confidential client financial information. Strict confidentiality must be maintained. Completion of a confidentiality form and a background check is required.
