Job description

Description
In this position, you will act as an internal training consultant, collaborating with upper management, division managers, subject-matter experts, and end users across the organization to assess and address employee training needs. You will apply your expertise in how people learn as you design and develop new learning solutions that inspire and enable Sargent & Lundy employees to continuously develop their skills, knowledge, and capabilities. You must apply basic project management skills to lead your assigned projects through the entire ADDIE development cycle.
Learning solutions typically include modalities such as online courses built in Articulate Rise and Storyline, explainer videos, exams, and surveys, as well as occasional job aids, instructor-led courses (virtual, in-person, and hybrid), and infographics. Courses often cover technical engineering concepts and processes. Our team follows a rigorous set of processes and standards to design and develop high-quality learning experiences. We're a highly collaborative team where ideation and constructive feedback are valued.
The Instructional Designer position reports to the Director of Learning & Organizational Change and works under the supervision of the Instructional Design Manager. The Training & Development group is positioned within Operations.
While this is a remote position, occasional travel to the Chicago office is required. The Instructional Design team has at least one in-office day per quarter. You may also be asked to come in to attend specific meetings, as appropriate.
This is a full-time temporary position, scheduled for 40 hours per week, with an estimated duration of 12 months.
Typical Activities Include:
  • Gathering and assessing a variety of sources to deepen your understanding of the project's audience, content, and needs. This may include interviewing organizational stakeholders and subject-matter experts, collecting and analyzing survey results, reviewing and evaluating existing courses and source content, etc.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders to define learning objectives.
  • Designing learning solution proposals that address the defined project needs and incorporate adult learning principles and instructional design best practices. This includes presenting your design proposals to stakeholders and incorporating their feedback.
  • Drafting outlines, storyboards, scripts, and/or prototypes to support development.
  • Building polished final deliverables that contain clear instructional copy, adhere to brand guidelines, and incorporate basic graphic design/visual communication principles.
  • Collaborating with other instructional designers, including participating in team brainstorming and design critique activities, requesting and incorporating feedback on work-in-progress deliverables, providing feedback to other designers, supporting other designers on client calls and presentations, etc.
  • Collaborating with organizational support groups such as IT, Corporate Communications, and Training Admin to ensure your solutions align with Sargent & Lundy systems and standards.
  • Gathering and analyzing data and feedback throughout development and after the launch. Forming insights and developing proposals to revise learning solutions based on key insights when appropriate.
  • Communicating project status to relevant stakeholders consistently throughout the project.
