Virtual CEOs often work with startups, remote-first companies, or businesses seeking cost-effective executive leadership. Their responsibilities may include setting company vision, managing financial performance, and driving business development.

To succeed as a Virtual CEO, comprehensive executive leadership experience, strategic business management skills, and a track record of organizational growth are essential, often supported by an advanced degree such as an MBA. Job description

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) โ€“ Heavy Civil Construction background REQUIRED

We are partnering with a rapidly growing, privately held heavy civil contractor to identify a hands-on Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead the organization through its next phase of growth and operational scale. This is not a traditional corporate CEO role. This is an opportunity for a field-oriented operator to step in, take ownership of day-to-day execution, and help build a more structured and scalable organization.

This is a unique opportunity for a hands-on executive to step into a high-impact leadership role, working closely with ownership to build a scalable, multi-state infrastructure platform while maintaining the entrepreneurial culture that has driven the company's success.

The Opportunity

The CEO will serve as the operational leader of the business, working closely with ownership to drive project execution, improve financial visibility and discipline, build accountability across teams, and support continued growth across public-sector infrastructure projects. This role is best suited for someone who has grown up in heavy civil construction and understands how to run jobs, manage teams, and solve problems in the field.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day operations across project management, field execution, and corporate functions
  • Own full P&L performance, including revenue growth, margin management, forecasting, and cash flow
  • Establish operating cadence and performance visibility across projects and the broader organization
  • Strengthen job cost reporting, forecasting, and project execution discipline
  • Build and maintain relationships with clients, agency partners, and financial stakeholders
  • Oversee contract administration, risk management, and compliance across public-sector projects
  • Develop and lead a high-performing leadership team with clear accountability and ownership
  • Partner with ownership on growth strategy, market expansion, and potential acquisitions

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Bachelors degree required; MBA or other advanced degree strongly preferred
  • A minimum of 10+ years of experience as a CEO, Division President, or COO, with leadership experience within heavy civil construction or civil engineering as a general contractor
  • Strong understanding of civil construction methods, specifications, and execution; experience with DOT, federal, or municipal projects
  • Strong financial acumen, including job costing, forecasting, and margin management
  • Ability to introduce structure and discipline without losing agility
  • Strong leadership presence and ability to operate in a high-accountability environment
  • This is a hybrid role and must be willing to travel to Southwest Colorado consistently, as well as various project sites throughout Colorado and the Rocky Mountain/Southwest region as needed.
