What is a Vertical Farming job?

A Vertical Farming job involves working in the agricultural industry to grow crops in vertically stacked layers, often using hydroponic, aeroponic, or aquaponic systems. These roles can include farm operations, crop management, system maintenance, research, and technology development. Employees may work in controlled indoor environments to optimize plant growth and resource efficiency. Vertical farming professionals help improve sustainability by reducing land use, water consumption, and transportation costs.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in vertical farming?

In a vertical farming role, your day may begin with monitoring climate control systems, checking nutrient levels, and inspecting plant health in multiple stacked layers or growth modules. You'll likely use specialized software and sensors to log data and adjust environmental settings for optimal crop yield. Daily tasks often include sowing seeds, transplanting seedlings, harvesting crops, and performing maintenance on both agricultural and technical equipment. Collaboration with a multidisciplinary team—ranging from horticulturists to engineers—is common, as is troubleshooting any unexpected challenges with crop growth or systems. This dynamic work environment combines hands-on plant care with the latest agricultural technology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Vertical Farming position, and why are they important?

To succeed in vertical farming, you’ll need expertise in plant science, hydroponics or aeroponics, and experience in greenhouse or controlled-environment agriculture, often supported by a degree in agriculture, biology, or horticulture. Familiarity with automation systems, environmental control technology, and data analytics for crop monitoring is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective teamwork are important soft skills for this collaborative and innovative field. These abilities are critical for ensuring healthy crop production, efficient farm operation, and for adapting to rapidly advancing agri-tech environments.

COMPANY:

Headquartered in Orlando, FL, Kalera is a science and technology-driven company dedicated to growing the very best possible produce; it is smart horticulture at its best. As the technology leaders in urban vertical farming, Kalera focuses on clean, safe, healthy, tasty greens and on the efficiencies of growing locally in controlled environments. Founded in 2010, Kalera has, over several years, perfected unique hydroponic growing methods combining optimized nutrients and light recipes, precise environmental controls, and clean room standards to produce safe, highly nutritious, pesticide-free, non-GMO vegetables with consistent high quality and longer shelf life year-round. With indoor facilities situated right where the demand is, Kalera can supply an abundance of produce locally, eliminating the need for long distance shipping. This means Kalera can ensure the highest quality and freshness by delivering product to customers within hours of harvest year-round. Kalera's plants grow while consuming 95% less water compared to field farming. Kalera has recently opened a new state-of-the-art growing facility in Orlando, FL. With an annual output of over five million heads of lettuce per year, this new facility is the highest production volume vertical farm in the Southeast US. The rapidly constructed facility also demonstrates Kalera's ability to quickly build and open farms around the US and internationally. Having recently announced new facilities in Atlanta, Houston, and Denver to open in early 2021, Kalera has aggressive near-term expansion plans both domestically and internationally.
