What is a Vertical Farming job?

A Vertical Farming job involves working in the agricultural industry to grow crops in vertically stacked layers, often using hydroponic, aeroponic, or aquaponic systems. These roles can include farm operations, crop management, system maintenance, research, and technology development. Employees may work in controlled indoor environments to optimize plant growth and resource efficiency. Vertical farming professionals help improve sustainability by reducing land use, water consumption, and transportation costs.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in vertical farming?

In a vertical farming role, your day may begin with monitoring climate control systems, checking nutrient levels, and inspecting plant health in multiple stacked layers or growth modules. You'll likely use specialized software and sensors to log data and adjust environmental settings for optimal crop yield. Daily tasks often include sowing seeds, transplanting seedlings, harvesting crops, and performing maintenance on both agricultural and technical equipment. Collaboration with a multidisciplinary team—ranging from horticulturists to engineers—is common, as is troubleshooting any unexpected challenges with crop growth or systems. This dynamic work environment combines hands-on plant care with the latest agricultural technology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Vertical Farming position, and why are they important?

To succeed in vertical farming, you’ll need expertise in plant science, hydroponics or aeroponics, and experience in greenhouse or controlled-environment agriculture, often supported by a degree in agriculture, biology, or horticulture. Familiarity with automation systems, environmental control technology, and data analytics for crop monitoring is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective teamwork are important soft skills for this collaborative and innovative field. These abilities are critical for ensuring healthy crop production, efficient farm operation, and for adapting to rapidly advancing agri-tech environments.

Job description

Who We Are

At 80 Acres Farms, we're on a mission to change the way the world eats—and we're looking for people who want to help us do it.

We grow pesticide-free salads, herbs, microgreens, and salad kits in smart vertical farms that produce more food with far fewer resources—using up to 95% less water and renewable electricity, with no reliance on weather or seasons. Our produce is available in more than 17,000 retail locations nationwide, including Kroger, Whole Foods, HEB, and The Fresh Market, and reaches food service partners across the country year-round.

What makes this possible is a combination of people, technology, and purpose. Our proprietary growing platform, developed by our technology subsidiary, Infinite Acres, provides our teams with real-time data and control over every aspect of the growing environment—making our farms among the most advanced in the world. We operate commercial farms in Ohio, Kentucky, Georgia, Texas, South Carolina, and Colorado, packhouses in Indiana, Virginia, and Washington, and research and development facilities in Arkansas, Israel, and the Netherlands.

We've grown significantly through the acquisitions of Kalera and Soli Organic, and we're just getting started.

If you're passionate about sustainability, food, and building something that matters, we'd love to have you on the team.
