Job description

Job Summary:
Job duties as assigned, but not limited to performing clerical duties and maintaining customer records. The Unit Assistant will perform duties as a team member, communicating with all hospital departments. Assists nurses in carrying out physicians' orders. Collaborates with co-workers and maintains a cooperative attitude to help ensure optimum operation of the unit. Under the supervision of the registered nurse, assists patients with activities of daily living, provides basic care to patients, assists in the maintenance of a safe and clean environment, & performs accuchecks and EKG's as ordered by the physician or LIP. The unit assistant demonstrates the ability to provide clerical support and reception duties to enhance the delivery of patient care when needed. This will include: registering patients on the computer using Meditech, placing orders on the computer & working with the Materials Management Department to ensure the department is stocked at all times with supplies. The unit assistant demonstrates the ability to work under pressure and in situations that demand patience, tact, stamina, and endurance. The age category of the patients this incumbent has regular contact with includes neonatal (1 day - 28 days) through old age (85 yrs. - death). Assumes other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements:
May be expected to lift up to 50 pounds or up to 150 pounds with assistance. May be expected to push or pull 500 pounds with assistance. Work is of medium demand; walking or standing most of the time while on duty. Visual and auditory acuity and manual dexterity are essential to performing the designated duties required. Optimal auditory acuity is required. Manual dexterity involving the handling of equipment and instruments or needles is essential to performing assigned duties. Physical conditions are clean, neat, and well-lit. May be subjected to unpleasant sights and odors, stressful situations, and hazardous or infectious agents where judgment as to precautions needed to be taken is essential. Exposure to limited amounts of radiation, hazardous chemicals or substances, and infectious disease processes is a possibility. Hours of duty may be irregular or unexpectedly extended due to the requirements of the department.
OSHA Exposure Classification:
Job Category I. Direct contact with blood or other body fluids to which universal precautions apply. Personal protective equipment is made available and must be worn.
Qualifications, Knowledge, & Ability:
• Demonstrated eligibility for employment in the United States.
• High School diploma or equivalent with proof of certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant.
• Must be able to achieve BLS certification within 60 days of employment.
• Ability to relate and work effectively with others.
• Willingness to participate in goal-setting and educational activities for own growth and advancements.
• Demonstrates verbal and written communication skills in English for interacting with patients, callers, and coworkers.
• Demonstrates communication skills for safe and effective patient care and to meet documentation standards.
• Demonstrates computer skills in utilizing word processing, integrated database and other functions.
• Ability to use office machines and telephone systems.
• Prior experience in a medical setting preferred.
• Knowledge of medical terminology is required.
• Demonstrates the ability to work efficiently and accurately in an atmosphere of frequent interruption.
