Unit Assistant Job

Powers Health is hiring a Unit Assistant for Neonatology to work days and evenings at Community Hospital in Munster, IN.

The Neonatology unit (Level III) cares for newborn infants in need of care due to prematurity, Intrauterine Growth Retardation (IUGR), Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS), Meconium Aspiration (MAS), Transient Tachypnea of the Newborn (TTNB), Infant of Diabetic Mother (IDM), Hyperbilirubinemia, hematologic disorders, congenital anomalies, cleft lip and palate with feeding problems, cardiac anomalies/disorders (infants with major cardiac problems are transferred to a Level III NICU via a competent transport team), Tracheal Esophageal Fistula (TEF), Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC), GI obstruction, gastroschisis, omphalocele (major surgical cases are transferred to a Level III NICU via a competent transport team), pyloric stenosis, hypoglycemia, feeding problems, sepsis, seizures, apnea/bradycardia, Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN), Intraventricular Hemorrhage (IVH), infants requiring iNO(inhaled nitric oxide), Palliative care (comfort measures for extreme prematurity or any condition incompatible with life), Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS).

Unit Assistant Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Performs general clerical duties and patient centered activities in a hospital nursing unit.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient population served on a designated nursing unit.
  • Assist with verification of appropriate infection prevention signage and stocking of PPE cabinets.
  • Assist with patient transfers and discharges.
  • Other duties as outlined in the job description.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • BLS Required
  • Supplementary commercial school/college courses in typing, computer technology, medical terminology are desirable.
  • 6 months experience as Ward, Clerk, Medical Assistant or Physician Receptionist preferred.
  • Annual validation of skills and safety, infection procedures.
