The Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at Riley Children's Health is a 23-bed unit located within The Heart Center on the 3rd floor of the Simon Family Tower.  We care for all post-operative cardiac surgical patients as well as critically ill children with complex cardiac disease needing medical ICU management.  We also care for newborns directly from birth who have a known cardiac defect or cardiac medical issue. 

The CVICU strives for a culture of learning and compassion.  Compassion for our patients and families and compassion for each other. When one succeeds, we all succeed. We believe in working as "One Team, All Heart".  Our team consists of the CVICU nurses, our CVICU Intensivist, CVICU unit techs, NPs, PAs, Cardiologists, Pharmacists as well as all the team members who touch the same patients within the Riley Heart Center (Cardiac Step-Down Unit, Cath Lab, Cardiac OR, Echo, Telemetry).

Our patient population consists of a wide range of ages including newborns up to adults. Our nursing staff develops and maintains an extensive clinical skillset and cares for patients requiring advanced respiratory support, continuous dialysis, continuous inotropic medications, heart transplantation, and mechanical cardiac assist devices such as ECMO and VAD.

Shift: Part Time, Shifts Available- Nights

Nursing skills gained on this unit: 

  • Caring for complex patients with multiple central access, intracardiac lines, ventilators, multiple medications and drains. 
  • Learn to Cardiovert, Defibrillate and Administer medication to stabilize heart rhythms
  • PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support
  • Caring for multiple VADs (Ventricular Assist Devices)
  • Learn Dialysis (Prisma and Aquadex)
  • The opportunity to learn ECMO and become part of the team as well

  • Consistently ranked in the US & World News Report 
  • #5 Pediatric Cardiac Program in the country, and #1 Pediatric Cardiac Program in the Midwest. 
  • "Red Shoe" award recipients and Daisy Award winners. 
  • 2 Margaret Martin Award winners on our staff
  • Nurses who are certified in CCRN, CPN, and Lactation 

Qualifications: 

  • Requires an Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) preferred. 
  • Requires an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license. 
  • Requires that the RN has graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program. 
    Exceptions: Candidates who have not graduated from a nationally accredited program may be considered if they possess more than two years of acute care experience. Such exceptions are subject to review and approval by the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO).
  • Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA. 
  • Other advanced Life Support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
