Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The UNC Chapel Hill Department of Transportation & Parking is responsible for coordinating all traffic, parking and transportation services for the campus. The department strives to provide a high level of service to students, employees and visitors who work, live, and visit the University and UNC Health Care System. Transportation & Parking (T&P), partners with stakeholders and customers to manage this key University infrastructure system effectively and efficiently balancing limited resources and the diverse needs of the campus community. The department manages ten parking decks and 160 surface parking areas with approximately 23,000 parking spaces providing employee, student, patient/visitor, and event access to the UNC campus. The University and UNC HealthCare System rely on a multi-modal transportation system that is heavily dependent upon local and regional transportation to provide access to the campus and hospitals. UNC partners with local and regional transit agencies to provide fare free at boarding local transit and subsidized regional transit opportunities for employees and students. T&P services and partners include Chapel Hill Transit, Triangle Transit Authority, Piedmont Area Rapid Transit, and Chatham Transit Network in addition to the UNC P2P Express and P2P On-Demand services. Transportation & Parking also offers a UNC Commuter Alternative Program(CAP) that incentivizes commuting opportunities including off-campus park & ride with frequent transit, Zip Ride (car rental by the hour), Zim Ride (ride sharing service), and van pool subsidy and coordination. T&P plans, manages, and implements traffic, transit, and parking services on a daily basis but also during major campus events such as large-scale athletic events, performing arts, Commencement, and VIP visits occurring at UNC.
Position Summary
The Security Division is seeking to hire individuals with sound communication skills to perform security related duties at UNC facilities. Position requires a North Carolina Drivers License and good driving records. We are currently accepting applications for individuals with availability any time, seven days a week. These positions should average between 20-30 hours per week.
These are temporary contract positions with no benefits. These positions could last up to one year. Uniforms are furnished, but you must provide solid black shoes and belt. Since these are uniformed positions, you must adhere to departmental grooming standards.
The officer will conduct routine patrols on foot or by assigned vehicle (golf cart) Security Officers will work individually and independently in generally unsupervised positions. The officer will lock and unlock doors as necessary. The officer will check and record any damage to University property and report this information to the appropriate designated department. Assist staff, individuals seeking services (directions, information) and visitors with concerns escorts and disabled vehicles. Equipment malfunctions power outages heating and cooling problems chemical spills fire and any other health or safety related issues are to be duly noted in the officer's activity report. Depending on the severity of the issue all aforementioned items shall also be reported to UNC dispatch. Complete documentation in a log format while on duty arriving on time and in proper uniform attire.
This position is considered to be an "ESSENTIAL" Employee position. This means that this position is one that is necessary to ensure that University operations continue uninterrupted during periods of adverse weather, and/or other emergency situations, including those that require the University to close. As such, employees will be required to report to work (or remain at work) according to your usual schedule, or upon notification, to report to work outside of your usual schedule.
This is a continuous recruitment and will remain open until all positions are filled.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High School diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require valid N.C. driver's license.
Management Preferences
Prefer candidates that have law enforcement/security experience and are familiar with providing security.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Must be able to work independently, train as required, perform foot patrol (walking), climb stairs, and to lift/move items up to approximately 25lbs. all with or without reasonable accommodation.
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
