Technical Sales Internship information

What is a technical sales internship?

A Technical Sales Internship is a short-term, hands-on role designed for students or recent graduates interested in combining technical knowledge with sales skills. Interns work alongside experienced sales professionals to learn how to understand customer needs, present technical solutions, and support the sales process for products or services with complex technical features. This internship helps participants develop communication, problem-solving, and product knowledge skills, making it a valuable stepping stone for a career in technical sales or related fields. Interns may also have the opportunity to attend client meetings, assist in product demonstrations, and contribute to sales strategies.

What are some typical challenges faced during a technical sales internship, and how can interns effectively overcome them?

Technical Sales Interns often encounter challenges such as quickly learning complex product details and effectively communicating technical benefits to non-technical clients. Balancing technical knowledge with persuasive sales techniques can be demanding, especially when handling objections or addressing customer concerns. To overcome these challenges, interns should actively seek mentorship from experienced sales engineers, participate in product training sessions, and practice clear communication. Engaging in regular team meetings and shadowing sales calls can also provide valuable insights into effective client interactions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical sales intern?

To thrive as a Technical Sales Intern, you need a solid understanding of technical concepts, strong communication skills, and a background in business or engineering-related studies. Familiarity with CRM software, sales automation tools, and basic data analysis platforms is often required. Strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, and a proactive attitude help interns build client relationships and work effectively within sales teams. These combined abilities are crucial for understanding client needs, conveying technical solutions clearly, and driving successful sales outcomes.

Job description

About the Job
MXD Process builds the equipment behind products people use every day. Our tanks, mixers, and turnkey process systems help manufacturers in food, beverage, cosmetics, chemical, and other regulated industries blend, process, and move liquids at scale. When a beverage brand takes a recipe from the lab to the plant floor, equipment like ours is often what makes it possible.
The Role
We are building out our outbound sales motion and need a Sales Development Representative to own the top of the funnel. You will work targeted lists of manufacturers, generating qualified pipeline from cold through email sequences, phone calls, and LinkedIn outreach. Your job is to start conversations, qualify opportunities, and book discovery calls for our Account Executive team. You will not be closing deals yet, but every outbound deal our AEs win will start with you.
This is an entry-level role built for a recent graduate. You do not need to know what a sanitary mixer is on day one. You need to be curious enough to learn, disciplined enough to do the reps, and coachable enough to get better every week. We will teach you the industry, the equipment, and the craft of outbound selling.
What You'll Do
  • Run consistent, high-volume outbound outreach through cold email, phone, and LinkedIn
  • Research target accounts and qualify prospects against our ideal customer profile (industry, application, project timeline, and budget)
  • Book discovery calls and hand qualified opportunities to our Account Executive team
  • Manage your pipeline and document every touchpoint in HubSpot (CRM Software)
  • Test and iterate on messaging and sequences based on what is actually working
  • Bring market feedback to sales leadership to sharpen our targeting and positioning
What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree; recent and upcoming graduates are encouraged to apply
  • Comfortable on the phone: you would rather make the call than wait for a reply
  • Strong written communication; you can write a short email that gets opened and answered
  • Self-directed and metrics-driven; you will know your numbers and own them
  • Coachable and curious; you ask good questions and apply feedback quickly
  • Organized and consistent; outbound rewards the person who shows up every single day
  • A genuine interest in manufacturing and how physical products get made
Bonus Points
  • A sales internship, part-time sales job, or campus fundraising or recruiting experience
  • Coursework or background in engineering, food science, chemistry, brewing, or another technical field
  • Familiarity with HubSpot, Apollo, or other CRM and prospecting tools
  • A competitive background (athletics, case competitions, debate) where you kept score and hated losing
What You'll Get
  • Compensation: Base salary plus commission tied to qualified meetings and sourced pipeline
  • A defined promotion path from SDR to Account Executive; this role exists to develop our next AEs
  • Direct coaching from sales leadership, including call reviews, live coaching, and a documented outbound playbook
  • Health, dental, vision, life insurance, 401(k), and paid time off
  • Onsite at our Jeffersonville, IN or Plain City, OH location, or a hybrid of onsite and remote
Why This Role
You would be joining a seven-person Account Executive team selling five- and six-figure capital equipment projects into industries that actually make things. Our outbound engine is early, which means the person who takes this role helps build it and gets credit for what it becomes. If you want a career in technical sales and you are willing to do the work it takes to start one, this is the role.
Physical Requirements
In general, this is an office-based job with a considerable amount of time spent at a computer, and will require the ability to operate a phone, computer, keyboard, mouse, and/or laptop. The ability to travel to other MXD Process locations occasionally is a requirement.
MXD Process is an equal opportunity employer and will make reasonable accommodation upon request of a qualified candidate or employee, consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
