Tech Manager information

What is a tech manager?

Tech Managers, also known as Technical Managers, are professionals who oversee technical teams and projects within an organization. They are responsible for planning, coordinating, and leading technology-related activities, ensuring that projects are completed on time and meet organizational standards. Tech Managers bridge the gap between technical staff and upper management by translating business needs into technical solutions. They also mentor team members, manage resources, and help set strategic direction for technology initiatives.

How do tech managers typically balance hands-on technical work with people management responsibilities?

Tech Managers often face the challenge of balancing their technical expertise with the demands of leading a team. In most organizations, they spend a portion of their time on code reviews, architectural decisions, and technical problem-solving, while also dedicating significant energy to mentoring, conducting one-on-ones, and facilitating team collaboration. The exact split can vary depending on company size and project phase, but successful Tech Managers prioritize clear communication and delegation to ensure both technical goals and team development are met. This role offers opportunities to influence both technology direction and team culture.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tech manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tech Manager, you need a solid background in software development or IT, leadership experience, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), cloud platforms, and sometimes certifications such as PMP or AWS Certified Solutions Architect are valuable. Strong communication, problem-solving, and team-building skills set outstanding Tech Managers apart. These competencies are crucial for effectively leading technical teams, ensuring successful project delivery, and aligning technology initiatives with business goals.

What does a tech manager do?

A tech manager oversees technology teams and projects, ensuring the development and implementation of technical solutions align with organizational goals. They coordinate between departments, manage budgets, and often have technical expertise in areas like software development, network infrastructure, or cybersecurity. Strong leadership, communication skills, and familiarity with project management tools are essential for success in this role.

What is the salary of a tech manager?

The salary of a tech manager typically ranges from $90,000 to $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and company size. Senior tech managers with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher compensation, often including bonuses and stock options.

Born in the Prairies, now part of a worldwide network, Skip is a tech company with an entrepreneurial spirit and the drive to be the best. We're a people-first, collaborative company with a fun, dynamic and innovative environment. Our vision is to empower everyday convenience. Whether it's a Friday-night feast, a post-gym poke bowl, grabbing some groceries or sunscreen, our tech platform connects tens of millions of customers with hundreds of thousands of restaurant, grocery and convenience partners across the globe.

About this role

We're growing the team behind our Restaurant tablet app (iOS & Android) - a solution used every day on tablets in live restaurants in Canada.
(Android-first: 90% Android tablets, 10% iPad; primary market: Skip Canada). Orders are received and processed in real time, so the stability and quality of the app directly impact our partners' day-to-day operations.

As a React Native Developer, you'll contribute across the full product lifecycle from designing new functionality through to release and production support as part of a distributed, collaborative team.

Location: Remote Canada

Reporting to: Technology Manager

These are some of the key components to the position:
  • Build and maintain features for our mobile application using React Native and TypeScript.

  • Design and implement reusable components and business logic in line with our architecture standards.

  • Integrate with REST APIs and handle real-time data (WebSockets, Pusher).

  • Write and maintain unit and component tests (Jest, React Native Testing Library).

  • Diagnose and resolve defects, including analyzing errors and crashes in Sentry.

  • Participate in code reviews and help maintain a clean, consistent codebase.

  • Contribute to the release cycle, including shipping over-the-air (OTA) updates via CodePush.

  • Collaborate with engineering, QA, and product partners in an async-friendly, distributed setting.

What will you bring to the team?
  • Proven commercial experience building React Native apps that have shipped to production.

  • Experience configuring and managing releases (Fastlane, App Store / TestFlight, Google Play, Firebase App Distribution).

  • Strong TypeScript skills (strict mode, generics, robust typing, typed Redux).

  • Solid understanding of React and its ecosystem: hooks, state management, performance and re-render optimization.

  • Hands-on experience with Redux Toolkit (createSlice, createAsyncThunk, selectors).

  • Experience integrating REST APIs (Axios) and handling asynchronous operations.

  • Experience working with real-time data (WebSockets and/or Pusher).

  • Strong debugging skills across JavaScript and native logs; experience with error-monitoring tools (Sentry).

  • Experience writing automated tests (Jest, React Native Testing Library).

  • Proficiency with Git and a healthy code-review culture.

Bonus:
  • Experience with CodePush / OTA updates (staged rollouts, rollbacks, version targeting).

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions).

  • Experience developing native modules and working with native code (Android - Kotlin/Java, Gradle; iOS - Swift/Objective-C, CocoaPods).

  • Experience with the Firebase suite (Analytics, Crashlytics, Performance, Remote Config).

  • Experience with OAuth2 / Keycloak and secure storage (Keychain).

  • Experience with end-to-end testing (Detox).

  • Experience integrating with hardware (receipt/thermal printers, maps, peripheral devices).
