Smithville Communications — Indiana’s trusted, locally owned provider of Internet, Voice, Security, and Enterprise data services — is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Systems Engineer to support and enhance our network infrastructure.
In this role, you will ensure the reliability, performance, and security of Smithville’s server environments while contributing to forward-looking projects that drive innovation and operational efficiency. WHAT YOU'LL DO
Operational Responsibilities
  • Design and implement disaster recovery for the provider-side server network.
  • Perform server and software upgrades to maintain security and performance standards.
  • Continuously monitor and maintain system health, performance and security across server environments.
  • Conduct server operational reviews and troubleshoot issues to ensure uptime and reliability.
  • Process service orders and support operational requests as needed.

Strategic Initiative Support
  • Research system and software requirements and perform lab testing to evaluate new technologies and solutions.
  • Design, build, and implement infrastructure improvements and new system capabilities.
  • Commission and deploy virtual and physical servers.
  • Perform hardware repairs, upgrades, and installations.

WHAT YOU BRING
  • Technical Degree or experience with server hardware, virtualization, and hosted environments.
  • Strong understanding of Microsoft Windows Server and Linux environments
  • Knowledge of networking fundamentals (DHCP, DNS, firewalls, email/web hosting, network security, database configuration and management, visualization, databases and DEVOPS).
  • Familiarity with system monitoring tools (Elastic Stack, or LOG management, Grafana, SolarWinds, SNMP).
  • Experience with backup solutions (e.g., Rubrik).
  • Knowledge of Debian and RedHat-based systems concepts.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • High attention to detail and a methodical approach to problem-solving and troubleshooting.
  • Effective project management and time management skills.
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt in a dynamic environment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 8am - 5pm; however, may work evenings, and/or weekends as needed to meet critical deadlines or respond to problems
  • On-call rotation one week per month
  • Typically working next to loud equipment in data centers
