Job description

The Sustainability Controller will play a critical role in building and managing URUS' sustainability data, reporting, and compliance capabilities, supporting the company's mission of "Better Cows for a Better World."

Operating at the intersection of Sustainability, Finance and Operations, the role will focus on establishing efficient systems and processes to collect, analyse, and report sustainability information across URUS' global business, including genetics, reproductive technologies, laboratory operations, and digital herd management platforms.

A core responsibility of the role is to own and manage sustainability data infrastructure, including energy and emissions management platforms such as UL360, ensuring high-quality, auditable, and decision-useful data. This will underpin internal performance tracking and external disclosures.

The Sustainability Controller will also lead the delivery of key outputs, including the annual CSRD-compliant and fully-assured sustainability report, responses to customer and investor questionnaires, and management of external sustainability ratings such as EcoVadis.

In parallel, the role will ensure URUS remains compliant with evolving regulatory requirements, including CSRD and California climate disclosure regulations (SB 253 and SB 261), translating these into practical data, controls, and reporting processes.

A key focus will be translating sustainability into commercial value drivers, including:

  • Improved producer profitability and efficiency
  • Reduced emissions intensity through genetics and farm management solutions
  • Operational efficiency across URUS facilities and supply chain

Key Responsibilities

Sustainability Data Systems & Tools

  • Lead the setup, management, and continuous improvement of sustainability data systems across URUS.
  • Own and manage key platforms including UL360, EcoVadis, and other digital tools used for sustainability data collection, validation, and reporting.
  • Design efficient processes to collect, consolidate, and analyse sustainability data across global operations, including laboratories, production sites, and commercial activities.
  • Ensure data quality, consistency, and audit readiness through robust controls and clear ownership across functions.
  • Lead the liaison with external auditors for assurance of externally published sustainability data, ensuring readiness of data, documentation, and controls in line with CSRD requirements.

Performance Tracking & Internal Reporting

  • Collate and analyse sustainability data to track performance against URUS' sustainability objectives and KPIs.
  • Lead the preparation of quarterly sustainability performance updates for the internal Sustainability Steering Committee.
  • Provide clear, commercially relevant insights on sustainability performance, risks, and opportunities to senior stakeholders.

External Reporting & Disclosures

  • Lead the production of URUS' annual sustainability report, ensuring alignment with relevant frameworks, including CSRD.
  • Coordinate inputs from across the business to ensure accurate, consistent, and high-quality disclosures.
  • Ensure alignment between sustainability reporting and financial reporting processes.
  • Lead the liaison with external auditors for assurance of the full sustainability report, coordinating the audit process and ensuring compliance with CSRD assurance requirements.

Regulatory Monitoring & Compliance

  • Stay up to date with relevant sustainability regulations and reporting requirements across key jurisdictions.
  • Assess applicability of new and evolving regulations to URUS' business model and operations.
  • Ensure sustainability reporting and disclosures are aligned with applicable regulatory requirements, including CSRD and California climate disclosure regulations (SB 253 and SB 261).
  • Support the implementation of processes, controls, and data systems required to comply with these regulations.
  • Work with internal stakeholders to implement processes and controls needed to meet regulatory expectations.

Stakeholder Requests & Ratings

  • Manage responses to sustainability-related questionnaires from customers, investors, and other stakeholders.
  • Lead the management of external sustainability ratings and assessments, including EcoVadis.
  • Identify opportunities to improve scores and performance across key ratings frameworks.

Financial Integration & Business Support

  • Support integration of sustainability metrics into financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting processes.
  • Provide analysis linking sustainability performance to cost efficiency, risk management, and value creation.
  • Support business cases and strategic initiatives (e.g. renewable energy, operational efficiency) with sustainability data and insights.

Requirements

  • 5-8 years' experience in finance, controlling, or sustainability-related roles.
  • Strong understanding of financial reporting, controls, and performance management.
  • Experience with sustainability reporting, carbon accounting, or non-financial metrics.
  • Ability to translate technical sustainability data into clear financial insights and business decisions.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience working cross-functionally across Finance, Operations, and technical teams.
  • Ability to operate in a global, multi-entity business with evolving systems and data maturity.
  • AI literacy, with the ability to leverage tools for data analysis, reporting, and process efficiency.

Desirable

  • Experience in agriculture, food systems, life sciences, or industrial/operational environments.
  • Familiarity with industry-specific sustainability frameworks (e.g. Dairy Sustainability Framework, Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef).
  • Experience with sustainability-linked financing or ESG-related financial instruments.
  • Knowledge of climate risk, emissions reduction strategies, or resource efficiency programs.

As a holding company with cooperative and private ownership, URUS is a family of businesses at the heart of the dairy and beef industry - Alta Genetics, GENEX, Genetics Australia, Leachman Cattle, Jetstream, PEAK, SCCL, Trans Ova Genetics and VAS.ย  Each organization has its unique identity, products, and services.
