They typically work on coding, debugging, testing, or supporting software under the supervision of more experienced developers. These roles provide practical experience, help participants build their technical skills, and often serve as a pathway to full-time employment in the tech industry.

What are some typical projects or tasks a Summer Programmer might work on during their internship?

As a Summer Programmer, you can expect to work on a variety of projects such as developing or enhancing software features, fixing bugs, and assisting with code reviews. You may also be involved in collaborating with senior engineers to learn best practices, writing documentation, or participating in agile team meetings. These responsibilities provide valuable hands-on experience, exposure to real-world coding environments, and opportunities to contribute meaningfully to active projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Summer Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Summer Programmer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), problem-solving skills, and often enrollment in or completion of relevant coursework in computer science. Familiarity with integrated development environments (IDEs), version control systems like Git, and debugging tools is typically expected. Strong communication, teamwork, and time management skills help you effectively collaborate on projects and meet deadlines. These competencies ensure you can make meaningful technical contributions and adapt quickly to short-term, project-based work environments.

Job description

Role Overview

The Summer Assistant Teacher supports the Lead Teacher and broader school team in creating a joyful, structured, and safe environment for students during both academic programming and intersession (camp-style) experiences.

This is a highly flexible, team-based role. Due to the dynamic nature of summer programming, Assistant Teachers should expect that daily classroom assignments, responsibilities, and student groupings may shift based on the needs of the building. Team members who thrive in this role are adaptable, proactive, and eager to jump in wherever support is needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support classroom instruction across small-group, whole-group, and individualized settings during academic sessions
  • Assist with and actively engage in intersession programming, including enrichment activities, projects, and camp-style experiences
  • Provide supervision and build positive relationships with students during arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, and transitions
  • Step into different classrooms or roles as needed-this may change daily based on staffing and student needs
  • Reinforce academic and behavioral expectations aligned with Atlas culture
  • Support student engagement, social-emotional development, and positive peer interactions
  • Assist with classroom setup, materials organization, and maintaining clean, functional learning spaces
  • Collaborate closely with teachers and staff to ensure smooth daily operations
  • Provide classroom coverage or lead small groups when needed

Schedule & Compensation

  • Dates: Start date is flexible in May; role runs through the end of August
  • Hours: 7:45 a.m. - 3:45 p.m., Monday through Friday
    • Includes a 30-minute unpaid lunch
  • Compensation: $125 per day
  • School Closure: June 29 - July 3

Note: We strongly prioritize candidates who are available to work consistently throughout the full summer.

Program Structure

Summer programming at Atlas includes a mix of:

  • Academic instruction (traditional classroom setting)
  • Intersession programming (camp-style, hands-on learning and enrichment)

Assistant Teachers will support both types of programming and should be comfortable shifting between structured academic support and more flexible, activity-based environments.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required; college coursework or degree preferred
  • Experience working with children in a school, camp, or youth setting strongly preferred
  • Substitute teaching certificate preferred (or willingness to obtain)
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to remain flexible, positive, and professional in a fast-paced environment
  • Commitment to supporting all students and contributing to a strong school culture

You Are

  • Adaptable and comfortable with change on a daily basis
  • Energetic, hands-on, and student-centered
  • A team player who is willing to step in wherever needed
  • Organized, reliable, and solution-oriented

Requirements for Employment

  • Pass a background check and complete the Family Care Safety Registry
  • Demonstrate eligibility to work in the United States

What We Offer

  • A collaborative, mission-driven team environment
  • Meaningful, hands-on experience working with students
  • The opportunity to be part of both academic and camp-style programming
