Job description

NorthStar Foundation focuses on the critical, unmet needs of North Omahaโ€™s young men, beginning in third grade, with the goal of helping them grow into healthy, educated, employed contributors to the community. NorthStar is the only single sex, male after school program in Greater Omaha. NorthStar serves 3rd โ€“ 12th grade boys.

NorthStar is seeking individuals to work directly in adventure program delivery. Adventure Instructors will have the opportunity to:

  • Coach participants on our 30 ft indoor rock wall
  • Lead participants through two levels (25 and 35 feet) on the Hitchcock High Ropes Challenge Course (HHRCC)
  • Guide participants hiking and biking utilizing nearby trails and parks.

Adventure programming prepares participants to be able to respond to challenges and transfer those lessons to their life and community. The Adventure Instructor works under the direct supervision of the Program Manager and Program Coordinator, and will lead programs that help youth and adults to realize their true potential through challenge and discovery.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead HHRCC, rock wall, hiking, and biking programs
  • Assure safety and supervision of participants at all times
  • Work as a team to prepare for programs by gathering and inspecting gear and cleanup after program is completed
  • Attend regularly scheduled professional development trainings/meetings
  • Participate in technical and facilitation trainings and assessments
  • Adhere to all NorthStar policies and procedures
  • Performs any other duties that may be assigned on an as needed basis
  • Accurately assess physical and emotional risks during programming
  • Facilitate conflict resolution in group and individual settings

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Pursuing an Associateโ€™s or Bachelorโ€™s degree preferred but not required
  • Prior experience working with students in a school, summer camp, or after school setting desired
  • Ability to effectively interact with sensitivity and responsiveness to cultural differences present in the organizationโ€™s service population, both individually and in groups
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Experience with and ability to embrace the application of technology and social media tools for youth academic programs
  • First Aid and CPR certification or ability to obtain within first 6 months of employment is required
  • Experience driving 12/15 passenger van preferred but not required
  • Ability to pass background screening with acceptable driving record
  • Must work well with others and interface with all organization departments
  • Preferred proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Must be 18 years of age or older (Prefer over 21 to be able to drive vans).

Physical Requirements

  • Must be sufficiently fit to participate in all site and course activities and maintain ample energy, strength, and focus to aid students and instructors
  • Ability to effectively function and maintain safety for multiple hours at a time
  • Willing to work in outdoor weather conditions, occasionally during poor weather
  • Occasionally must carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds

Schedule & Seasonal Hours

Adventure Instructors typically work 15โ€“20 hours per week, with schedules varying seasonally based on program needs.

School Year (Augustโ€“May)

Primary hours: Mondayโ€“Thursday, 2:00 PM โ€“ 7:00 PM

Occasional daytime programming on Fridays or during special events

Additional hours may be available based on trips or adventure programming needs

Summer Programming (Juneโ€“July)

Daytime camp shifts typically scheduled within:

8:00 AM โ€“ 12:00 PM

12:00 PM โ€“ 4:00 PM

8:00 AM โ€“ 4:00 PM (full-day camps)

Schedules may vary depending on enrollment, field trips, and outdoor programming logistics.
