The Sumitomo Biorational manufacturing site located on an expansive 73-acre site in Osage, IA is a state of the art 130,000 square foot plant and is the largest purpose-built biorational facility in the world. It serves as the manufacturing and quality control center for Sumitomo Biorational Company’s broad portfolio of fermentation products.

Description of Job:

As a Chemistry Analyst Intern at Sumitomo Biorational you will learn and be exposed to various Quality Control test methods for product release. The various assays include High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES), Capillary Electrophoresis-Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (CE-SDS) and various physical properties tests. In addition, you will be exposed to current good manufacturing practices (GMP). You will be assigned projects that are pre-determined by Quality department management with a focus within a specific area in the Chemistry lab. You will be required to write a project charter, all applicable protocols and procedures, and provide a final presentation. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Testing of raw materials, in-process, and finished goods.
  • Perform chemical testing using analytical instrumentation including HPLC, etc.
  • Troubleshooting laboratory instrumentation and administer simple repairs as needed.
  • Completion of bench records and data entry.
  • Cleaning and maintaining lab equipment and instrumentation.
  • Preparation of standards and stock solutions.
  • Maintenance of test methods and test procedures.
  • Data Entry within Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Conduct and / or assist with laboratory investigations and deviations.
  • Adhere to testing schedules to accomplish a high volume of critical work without compromising the integrity of the results while meeting the scheduling needs of manufacturing. 

Preferred Qualifications and Education:

  • HS diploma or equivalent required. Majoring in one of the following: Chemistry or closely related field desired. 
  • Good written and verbal communication required.
  • Ability to write, comprehend, and understand written scientific procedures.
  • Must have flexibility to work some limited off-shift and weekend hours.
