The Sumitomo Biorational manufacturing site located on an expansive 73-acre site in Osage, IA is a state of the art 130,000 square foot plant and is the largest purpose-built biorational facility in the world. It serves as the manufacturing and quality control center for Sumitomo Biorational broad portfolio of fermentation products.

Description of Job:

As a QC Laboratory Analyst at Sumitomo Biorational, you will be responsible for testing of in-process and final product. You will be responsible for scheduling the insects for testing purposes as well as maintaining and ensuring the availability of materials needed for testing. In this role, you must adhere to testing schedules to accomplish a high volume of critical work without compromising the integrity of the results while meeting the scheduling needs of manufacturing. Good documentation practices and well as the ability to follow and comprehend a written procedure is a requirement.


Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 5:00 am - 1:30 pm


Essential Functions:

  • Bioassay testing of raw materials, in-process, and finished goods.
  • Troubleshooting laboratory instrumentation and administer simple repairs as needed.
  • Completion of test records and data entry.
  • Cleaning, calibration and maintenance of lab equipment and instrumentation.
  • Daily, weekly and monthly cleaning as required.
  • Perform calculation and evaluation of insect bioassay results based on probit analysis utilizing Microsoft Excel and a specified statistical analysis program.
  • Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) testing in accordance with regulations.
  • Preparation of standards and stock solutions.
  • Maintenance of test methods and test procedures for the bioassay laboratories.
  • Data Entry within Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Conduct and / or assist with laboratory investigations and deviations.
  • Rearing and maintenance of the insect colonies to a high-quality standard as needed.
  • Preparation of insect diets as needed.
  • Must have flexibility to work some off-shift, weekend, and/or overtime hours as required to meet business needs.
  • Performs other tasks as specified by the manager/director.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • HS diploma or equivalent required. BA in Biology, Entomology, Microbiology, Chemistry or closely related field desired.
  • Experience with Good Aseptic Technique.
  • Experience with Good Lab Practices (GLP).
  • Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) experience or knowledge is beneficial.
  • Experience with insect rearing and maintenance of insect colonies desired but not required.
  • Experience with bioassay methods desired but not required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel and other spreadsheet/database software.
  • Good inter-departmental communication (written / verbal) required.
  • Ability to comprehend and understand written scientific procedures.

Base Salary: The estimated base salary for this position ranges from: $24.86 to $29.81/hour. Individual pay is based upon location, skills, experience, and other relevant factors.


Incentives: All full-time employees are eligible for an incentive program or profit-sharing program in addition to their base salary.
