What is subrogation?

A subrogation job involves recovering money from a third party who is responsible for causing financial loss, typically in insurance claims. Subrogation specialists investigate claims, analyze liability, and negotiate settlements to reimburse their company or clients. They work closely with adjusters, attorneys, and policyholders to ensure proper compensation. This role requires attention to detail, strong communication skills, and knowledge of insurance laws and policies.

What does someone in subrogation do?

In a Subrogation role, your daily responsibilities often include reviewing insurance claims to identify opportunities for recovery, investigating facts to determine liability, and working closely with insured parties, third parties, and legal representatives. You'll negotiate settlements, prepare and submit necessary documentation, and track the progress of active recovery cases. Additionally, you'll collaborate with other claims adjusters, legal teams, and sometimes attend court hearings or arbitration as needed. This position demands a mix of investigative work, negotiation, and attention to detail to maximize recovery on paid claims.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in subrogation?

To thrive in Subrogation, you need a background in insurance claims, legal principles, and investigative research, often supported by a degree in business, law, or a related field. Proficiency with claims management systems, insurance software, and knowledge of subrogation protocols or relevant certifications like CSRP (Certified Subrogation Recovery Professional) are highly beneficial. Excellent negotiation, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure successful recovery of claim costs, collaboration with legal teams, and thorough documentation in a fast-paced environment.

How do you become a subrogation adjuster?

To become a subrogation adjuster, typically one needs a high school diploma or equivalent, along with experience in insurance claims or claims adjusting. Many employers prefer candidates with a relevant license or certification, such as the Adjuster License, and strong negotiation and analytical skills. Gaining knowledge of insurance policies and legal procedures is also beneficial.
