In conjunction with the Chief Strategy Officer and the Chief Clinical Strategy Officer, and supported by other members of the Department of Strategy, the Director for Strategic Planning-Regional Network will have lead responsibility for assisting Michigan Medicine leadership in the development and implementation of short- and long-term strategic plans and business development initiatives for the Regional Network (inclusive of UM Health-Sparrow and UM Health-West). This individual will work with the Chief Strategy Officer, Chief Clinical Strategy Officer, other members of the Strategy Department, as well as AMC and Regional executive leadership teams to facilitate clinical and business integration efforts across the delivery network.

In this role, the Director for Strategic Planning-Regional Network will, in conjunction with other Director-level leaders within the Department, develop, lead and mentor a team of strong strategists who are centralized to promote consistent approaches, definitions, and alignment with the strategic vision, while supporting planning efforts across the organization.

• Lead the development and implementation of short- and long-term strategic plans for the regional network.
• Lead regional strategic planning workgroups in development of opportunities, strategic updates, and strategic capital deployment.
• Identify growth opportunities aligned with organizational priorities, including new services, site of care, and geographic expansion.
• Facilitate strategic planning processes with senior leadership and key stakeholders.
• Partner with Regional leaders to facilitate clinical growth and back-office integration efforts of health system affiliates such as UMH-W in Grand Rapids and UMH-Sparrow in Lansing.
• Collaborate with leaders across the enterprise to develop and launch integrated strategic growth service lines, achieving desired outcomes in quality, patient experience, operations, and financial metrics.
• Partner with key stakeholders on the preparation of board meeting materials and coordinate with internal governance administrative teams in scheduling and delivering materials.
• Oversee the development of business plans, proformas, and feasibility studies to rigorously evaluate promising opportunities that support strategic growth priorities
• Identify, evaluate, and develop strategic partnerships, joint ventures, and affiliations. Support due diligence, business case development, and negotiations for partnership opportunities.
• Develops and maintains situational analyses for current and potential business opportunities, markets and customers to support ongoing planning efforts.
• Partner with analytics teams to ensure accurate, timely, and meaningful data reporting.
• Lead multidisciplinary groups in the development of market, environmental, competitive, and financial analyses to support the development on long-range business planning.
• Collaborate with Finance to ensure alignment on business opportunity analysis and capital planning.
• Develop working relationships with other planners and regulatory agencies in the region and surrounding states.
• Oversee all CON-related activities, including opportunity identification, application development, post-approval compliance.
• Oversight of the Annual CON survey for all UMH Sparrow facilities.
• Serve as subject matter expert on CON regulations and processes for the Region.
• Collaborate with legal, finance, and operational leaders to ensure successful CON approvals and project execution.
• Conduct market share analysis, competitive intelligence, and service line assessments to identify opportunities and threats.
• Actively market Strategic Plannings scope of services and capabilities across the enterprise to promote awareness and utilization.
• Foster a culture of exceptional customer service within the Department.
• Lead in the recruitment of additional strategic planners to the Department and collaborate with other Department leaders in the development of an effective, well-run, highly service-oriented department.

A strong candidate will have the following qualifications:

• A Master's degree in Business Administration or Health Services Administration or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary.
• At least 10 years of experience in strategy functions within a multi-facility health system
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a complex, multi-constituency organization.
• Strong understanding of the health care environment and trends, as well as the ability to translate trends into potential strategies.
• Deep understanding of the Lansing and Grand Rapids markets.
• Significant experience in health system enterprise strategic planning and service line planning, ideally including specific experience in a regional tertiary care center environment as well as experience with rural health settings.
• Experience with Michigan's CON regulations and requirements.
• Advanced written and oral communication and interpersonal skills that enable comfortable interaction with key stakeholders at all levels, including senior executives, physicians, operational leaders, and potential partners.
• Strong ability to organize and prioritize in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment with success at simultaneously managing a variety of complex projects.
• Must be able to assume a high degree of independent functioning demonstrating prudent decision making, autonomy and flexibility.

PLEASE NOTE: This position requires frequent travel for meetings across the medical campus, administrative sites, and with affiliated systems and organizations.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

This position reports directly to Chief Strategy Officer, Michigan Medicine, with additional supervisory input from the Department's Chief Clinical Strategy Officer. Performance evaluations will be provided by the Chief Strategy Officer and Chief Clinical Strategy Officer jointly.

SUPERVISION EXCERCISED

The Director for Strategic Planning-Regional Network will directly supervise 2 to 3 strategists within the Department, with the expectation that additional team members will be recruited to the team over time.
