What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Staff Developer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Staff Developer, you need deep expertise in software engineering, system architecture, and mentoring, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field and extensive industry experience. Mastery of programming languages, code review systems, and development tools like Git, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud platforms is essential. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help a Staff Developer guide teams and foster technical growth. These capabilities ensure that teams deliver high-quality software efficiently while cultivating a strong engineering culture.

How do Staff Developers typically collaborate with other teams to drive large-scale technical projects?

Staff Developers often act as technical leaders and cross-team collaborators, working closely with product managers, designers, and engineers from various departments. They are responsible for setting technical direction, mentoring junior colleagues, and ensuring alignment across teams on architecture and best practices. Regularly, they participate in design reviews, code walkthroughs, and strategy sessions to break down silos and help deliver complex projects efficiently. This collaborative approach enables Staff Developers to have a significant impact on both technical execution and organizational success.

What are Staff Developers?

Staff Developers are highly experienced software engineers who play a critical role in driving technical excellence and leadership within an organization. They often focus on designing complex systems, mentoring other engineers, and setting technical direction for teams or entire departments. Unlike individual contributors at lower levels, Staff Developers are expected to influence technical strategy, collaborate across teams, and advocate for best practices. Their work often impacts the broader engineering organization and contributes significantly to business goals.

Job description

At Vast, our mission is to contribute to a future where billions of people are living and thriving in space. Vast is developing next-generation space stations to ensure a continuous human presence in space for America and its allies, enabling advanced microgravity research and manufacturing, and unlocking a new space economy for government, corporate, and private customers. Using an incremental, hardware-rich and low-cost approach, Vast is rapidly developing its multi-module Haven Station. Haven Demo's 2025 success made Vast the only operational commercial space station company to fly and operate its own spacecraft. Next, Haven-1 is expected to become the world's first commercial space station when it launches, followed by additional Haven modules to enable permanent human presence by 2030. Our team is all-in, committed to executing our mission safely and on time. If you want to work with the most talented people on Earth furthering space exploration for humanity, come join us.
Vast is looking for a Staff DevOps Engineer, reporting to the Manager, DevOps & Platform, to support the development of the systems that will be required for the design and build of artificial-gravity human-rated space stations.
