Additionally, they may be responsible for hiring, mentoring, and evaluating team performance. Their role bridges the gap between technical staff and upper management to align technology goals with business objectives.

What Is a Software Manager?

A software manager oversees the development, installation, and maintenance of new or upgraded software for an organization. As a software manager, you coordinate with staff to determine client needs and expectations, establish budget and timelines, and ensure that employees use the product correctly. The main difference between a Software Manager and a Software Engineer lies in their roles. Software Managers focus on team leadership, project management, and strategic planning, while Software Engineers are primarily responsible for coding and developing software. Both roles require technical knowledge, but their responsibilities and work focus differ significantly.

How does a Software Manager typically balance hands-on technical work with leadership responsibilities?

Software Managers often juggle both technical and leadership duties, but the balance can vary depending on the organization and team size. In many cases, Software Managers spend a significant portion of their time on people management tasks such as mentoring team members, conducting code reviews, planning sprints, and facilitating communication between stakeholders. However, they may also remain involved in architectural decisions or critical technical challenges to stay connected with the team's work. Effective Software Managers prioritize delegating coding tasks to their team while focusing on enabling productivity, resolving blockers, and ensuring project alignment with business goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Manager, you need a strong background in software development, project management, and leadership, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with Agile methodologies, version control systems like Git, and project management tools such as Jira is typically required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and team-building skills set outstanding managers apart in this role. These competencies are essential for delivering projects on time, fostering effective collaboration, and driving high-performing engineering teams.

Job description

Who are we?

A Minnesota-based company, RealTime Solutions, thrives on proactively addressing foodservice trends, pitfalls, and opportunities, always staying one step ahead. By seamlessly merging data intelligence with marketing finesse, we create campaigns and tactics that are not just reactive but rooted in insightful strategy. As a Buyers Edge Platform brand, our deep foodservice expertise and data-rich analytics set us apart, allowing us not only to identify growth opportunities for Fortune 500 food manufacturers, but also craft bold strategies and tactics that redefine their success in foodservice.ย

This role is based out of our Becker, MN office. We are unable to offer work sponsorship for this role.ย

We are seeking a Senior Manager, Software Engineering to lead and develop a high-performing technical team responsible for data, reporting, applications, and infrastructure supporting the RealTime Solutions brand. This role balances people leadership, delivery execution, and hands-on technical oversight to ensure reliable systems, high-quality data, and continuous improvement in development velocity. In this role, you'll serve as a key partner to internal stakeholders and external clients, translating business needs into scalable technical solutions.ย

Your impact:

  • Manage an in-person and remote team of software developers, database processionals and IT staff
  • Lead sprint planning, backlog prioritization, and delivery execution to improve team velocity and predictability
  • Assign and prioritize work across the team based on business needs and technical complexity
  • Manage vendor invoices up to an established authorization limit
  • Serve as the primary IT point of contact for internal stakeholders and external clients
  • Participate in Team Lead and cross-functional leadership meetings
  • Ensure reliable operation of databases, reporting systems, and client-facing applications
  • Maintain high standard for data integrity, system performance, and documentation

About you:

  • 8+ years of experience in IT, software development, or data-focused roles
  • 3+ years of experience leading or managing technical teams
  • Strong experience with SQL Server, reporting, and data integration environments
  • Experience with database performance tuning and troubleshooting as well as data integrity and quality management
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)
  • Strong people leadership skills, including mentoring, coaching, and performance management
  • Ability to organize work using Agile or sprint-based delivery methods
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to balance hands-on technical work with strategic oversight
  • Excellent communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands and manage delivery expectations

Don't meet every requirement mentioned here? Studies have shown that women, communities of color and historically underrepresented talent are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. At Buyers Edge Platform and our subsidiary brands, we are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive and authentic workplace. So, if you're excited about this role but your past experience doesn't align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we strongly encourage you to apply. You may be just the right candidate for this position or others with us!

What's in this for you?

  • Great benefits from day one. We offer medical, dental, vision, FSA, company-paid life insurance, and more-plus a 401(k) with company match.
  • Grow with us. Enjoy strong training, development, and competitive pay.
  • Work-life balance. Our flexible PTO policy lets you take time when you need it-no accrual required
