Software Development Associate information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Development Associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Development Associate, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C++), problem-solving abilities, and a relevant bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and agile development methodologies is typically expected. Strong teamwork, communication skills, and a willingness to learn new technologies set standout candidates apart. These skills and qualities enable associates to effectively contribute to projects, adapt to evolving requirements, and collaborate within dynamic development teams.

What are some common challenges Software Development Associates face when transitioning from academic projects to professional work?

Software Development Associates often find that real-world projects involve more collaboration, code reviews, and adherence to coding standards than academic assignments. In a professional setting, there is also a greater emphasis on version control, agile methodologies, and communicating progress with team members and stakeholders. Balancing multiple tasks and deadlines, learning to navigate legacy codebases, and quickly adapting to new tools or frameworks are frequent challenges, but they also provide valuable opportunities for growth and skill development.

At Jack Henry, we build technology that empowers community banks and credit unions to compete and thrive in a rapidly evolving fintech landscape. Our teams deliver modern, secure, and scalable solutions that help financial institutions serve their customers with confidence. We're equally passionate about growing future talent through handson learning, mentorship, and realworld engineering experience.

About the Team

This apprenticeship sits within OCTO, Jack Henry's technology organization focused on delivering innovative financial services for community banks and credit unions. The Android team is responsible for developing and maintaining the Android version of Banno Mobile, a whitelabel digital banking application used by financial institutions nationwide to provide a modern mobile experience to their customers.

About the Apprenticeship

As a Software Engineering Apprentice - Android, you'll gain handson experience contributing to a production mobile application used by hundreds of financial institutions. This is a learningfirst role designed for individuals early in their software engineering journey who are eager to grow their Android skills while working alongside experienced engineers in a supportive, collaborative environment.

The apprenticeship aligns with Jack Henry's Software Engineering career path, with potential conversion to a fulltime Engineer I, Software role based on performance, business needs, and program completion.

Team members are encouraged to take ownership of their work while having the autonomy to learn in ways that suit their growth style. The environment is relaxed yet focused, with plenty of opportunities to collaborate, pair program, and learn from experienced teammates.

Management & Mentorship

You'll be supported by a manager and mentor who prioritize consistent communication and handson guidance. While communication style may vary by individual, apprentices are expected to engage with teammates daily through chat, meetings, or pairing. Earlycareer talent is encouraged to be curious, proactive, and comfortable exploring independently while asking questions whenever needed.

What We're Looking For

This role is ideal for someone who views themselves as a humble, lifelong learner and is excited about growing their skills in Android development. Successful apprentices are curious, communicative, and unafraid to ask questions or make mistakes as part of the learning process.
