Job description

Please note ย - only candidates with experience using transcription software and stenographic shorthand will be considered for this position. ย 

JOB PURPOSE AND OVERVIEW

Create verbatim record of court proceedings.ย  Prepare transcripts when as requested.ย  Ensure exhibits are properly labeled and maintain custody during and after completion of court proceedings. ย ย 

The Lucas County Court of Common Pleas is the trial court of general jurisdiction. This means that it hears felony cases as well as civil disputes where the amount of money in controversy exceeds $500 and also has exclusive jurisdiction over civil cases exceeding $15,000.

Ten judges currently serve in the general division. As a part of their judicial office, they conduct pre-trials, schedule deadlines, rule on motions, and hear both jury and bench trials.

The Court Administrator, under the direction of the judges, is responsible for overseeing the non-judicial functions of the court including the following departments:

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  1. ย ย ย  Minimum of a High School Diploma.
  2. ย  ย  Knowledge and ability to use Computer Aided Transcription software and stenographic shorthand writers with a minimum ย  ย  ย  ย  writing speed of 225 wpm.
  3. ย ย ย  Must possess keen analytical and organizational skills and the ability to function at a high level within a large, complex organization.ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย 
  4. ย ย ย  Knowledge of common office practices, procedures, and equipment.ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย 
  5. ย ย ย  Proficiency in operating a personal computer and using Microsoft Office products such as Word, Outlook.ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย 
  6. ย ย ย  Ability to prioritize work, work independently without daily direct supervision, and manage a variety of projects simultaneously in a high pressure atmosphere under severe time constraints.ย  Must have excellent-management skills and be highly organized and detail-oriented.

  2. Complete and maintain a witness log of all evidentiary hearings.ย 
  3. Maintain a log of all notes for immediate retrieval as well as preserving notes, exhibits, and transcripts in accordance with the Court's evidence retention standards.
  4. Create exhibit log during Court proceedings.
  5. As requested during proceedings read back testimony from notes.
  6. Mark and maintain exhibits during proceedings.
  7. Retain, file, and log all offered and admitted exhibits for immediate retrieval during proceedings and for appellate proposes.
  8. Complete necessary paperwork pertaining to contraband and other valuable materials.
  9. ย  Seal or expunge notes, exhibits, and transcripts as directed by the Court.
  10. Prepare accurate certified transcripts.
  11. Conduct research as needed
